POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
For a brief few weeks in an otherwise groundbreaking season – without doubt the most rewarding of his career in football – Michael Woud felt the weight of fan, and coach, disappointment. The dropping, the rebuke, the blame even that went with it he could handle. Part of sport. Part of life. The public flagellation? The death threats? Yes, death threats. Now that was a different matter altogether. Woud has just begun his third season as a goalkeeper for runaway Kiwi sports success story Auckland FC in Australia’s A-League professional football competition, and right now he couldn’t be in a happier place, firmly established as the No 1 stopper at this remarkable startup club that has done nothing but contend in its first two seasons of existence. He’s won a championship, played a key role in it and been to the Fifa World Cup with the All Whites. He also got engaged to the woman he thinks of as his soulmate to round out probably the best year of his adult life. But this 27-year-old rather complex character – he is an unabashed straight talker who tells it as it is, can sometimes be angry, often a little broody, but also, when you catch him on a good day, engaging, forthright and refreshingly transparent – has a few things he clearly wants to get off his chest in a long conversation with Sunday ahead of his eighth season as a professional footballer. “I thought my season was finished,” he remembers. “There were a few stressful weeks because, as a goalkeeper, when you make a mistake it’s going to be high profile. Those are the moments you look in the mirror and find out about yourself. When things are going well, it’s easy. But when things are down and people don’t believe in you and don’t like you, that’s when you have to be strong because no-one else is going to be there for you.” He’s faced death threats, career setbacks and personal heartbreak, yet Woud has emerged as one of football’s breakout stars. At the link in bio, he tells Marc Hinton how he stays grounded. 📝@marc.hinton 📸 @darkerartsnz, Getty Images (slide 3) 👕@kowtowclothing, @rmwilliams @showroom22

Joy is not meant to be a crumb… …sometimes it looks like a slow Sunday. Other times, it looks a lot like friends and whānau and soccer/football on a Saturday with 20,000+ fans!!! 😎⚽️🙌 Sharing small (and large) moments of joy is important because sharing the good stuff multiplies it! 💥 I hope you’re finding joy, wherever and however you are today. ☀️ Thank you Lisa, Cass, Bestie Boo, Yoda, & Wife for the evening of the sports & being my wild and gentle village. 🌈💪 You’re all glimmers. Stardust wrapped in beautiful meat suits. (And, weeeeee hooooo… it’s a cherry on top of the glimmer-cake that @aucklandfc beat Melbourne 3-1!) Such an atmosphere! Such a vibe! What a TEAM!!! ❤️✨❤️

• #1 GK Michael Cornelis Woud He has played in J League (Kyoto & Kofu) After the game, when I got his autograph and I told him that I am from Japan, he answered “Arigatou!” Of course I also told him “Arigatou!” • #4 Nando Pijnaker He participated FIFA World Cup as a member of NZ National team. To be honest, I didn’t know him enough before this game. However, I was very glad to get his sign from such a famous player. • Melbourne City #15 Andrew Nabbout He has played in Urawa Reds, my favorite club for about 1 year. I was very glad to see him playing energetically. I hope he scores a lot for his hometown.
