At Sealaska, we take pride in our audacious vision for the future and believe in what’s possible. For board-endorsed candidate Angela Saa Doo ou Michaud, the most gratifying outcomes begin with a willingness to find innovative solutions and take a bold step into the unknown.

In her dual-track career as the first female Tlingit chiropractor and a tribal health executive, Angela has made a lasting impact on models of care for our communities. “The professional accomplishment I am most proud of is developing and implementing a tribal doctor training program through Southcentral Foundation and getting it accredited at Ilisagvik College,” she said.

Angela’s passion for sharing culture and tradition through the tribal health system and fostering holistic wellness is also reflected by her implementation of an integrated substance-use healing program for the residential, outpatient and prevention programs at Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC), where she currently serves as senior director of Recovery Services.
Her desire to serve on the board comes from many sources of inspiration, but above all, Angela has the heart of a healer. It’s no surprise that, when it comes to our work at Sealaska, she takes most pride in efforts to regenerate our lands and waters, nurture and empower shareholders and revitalize language and culture.

“I am so proud of Sealaska for cutting the losses of the timber industry and moving in the direction of ocean health and fisheries,” Angela said. “I’m happy that we’ve invested in Spruce Root to help our shareholders grow businesses or live out their entrepreneurial dreams. And I’m proud of Sealaska Heritage Institute and the investment in keeping culture and heritage very much alive in our communities.”

At Sealaska, we work together with pride and purpose to bring our mission to life. Sealaska Board-Endorsed Candidate Angela Saa Doo ou Michaud believes that the power of collaboration lies in the diverse experiences and strengths of our people, communities and partners.

“Working together makes us stronger,” Angela said. “Everyone has unique traits and gifts that can help us succeed. We are all powerful in our own ways.”

Having led a dual-track career as the first female Tlingit chiropractor and current senior director of Recovery Services with Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC), Angela knows a thing or two about working with people, tribes and organizations to achieve positive outcomes.

Her efforts to share culture and tradition through the tribal health system include developing a full wellness model of care at Southcentral Foundation, establishing an accredited Tribal Doctor Training Program at Ilisagvik College and implementing an integrated substance-use healing program for the residential, outpatient and prevention programs at CITC.

When it comes to Sealaska’s vision for our shared future, Angela said we must lead with an underlying respect for one another. “We need to celebrate who we are and where we come from as individuals, prioritize communication on important topics and find common ground,” she said. “We need to make sure everyone is onboard with and included in our path forward.”

Sealaska Board-Endorsed Candidate Angela Saa Doo ou Michaud said her personal role models are her father, Dr. Bill Pfeifer and Alaskan health care leader Katherine Gottlieb.

“My dad never quits,” Angela said. “He always strives for excellence, but makes sure he brings everyone with him. He wants people who are around him to be successful, too. He helps those who need it without asking anything in return.”

Katherine taught her about the Tribal health system and how to make it our own. “She showed me how to speak in public and share our stories of resilience, excellence and tradition,” Angela said. “She is a strong Native woman who helped me learn how to work with Tribes to help meet the needs of our people.”

The second shareholder descendant to join the board, Angela has led a dual-track career as the first female Tlingit chiropractor and an executive leader, working to strengthen the tribal health system through culture and tradition.

Angela's inspiration to serve shareholders comes from an awareness of evolving needs within our communities and a focus on communication, community and connection.

But, above all, Angela has the heart of a healer and wants to help our people reach their full potential, just like her role models instilled in her.

Sealaska Board-Endorsed Candidate Angela Saa Doo ou Michaud has always been drawn to the ocean. “It’s my safe place and it’s where I go to connect,” she said. “Being on the water, you can see the whole ecosystem at work. It is life and prosperity in action.”

The first female Tlingit chiropractor and current senior director of Recovery Services with Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC), Angela has worked to strengthen the tribal health system through culture and tradition for more than 15 years.

Angela is also an international speaker and a mother of four, but she still makes time to sit on the beach for hours in her hometown of Ketchikan and watch the waves and the occasional cruise ship, looking out for whales and sea lions, looking up for eagles and ravens.

The way Angela sees it, healthy oceans and healthy people go hand in hand.In her role at CITC, Angela implemented an integrated substance-use and addiction recovery programs to provide cultural healing for the residential, outpatient and prevention programs. Her focus is providing resources for individuals and families to work toward wellness, including ways to connect with our ancestral homelands and waters.

Angela is motivated to help translate Sealaska’s ocean health identity into continued business success, not only to provide resources to enrich the lives of current and future shareholders, but also to ensure oceans can heal and inspire next generations just as they did our ancestors.

Happy Mother’s Day from Sealaska!

As Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian people, our identity is shaped by the maternal figures in our lives. Today, we celebrate the many mothers, aunties, grandmothers, sisters and matriarchs that make us who we are.

For Sealaska’s board-endorsed candidates, motherhood has played a central role in the desire to serve shareholders. We’re proud to see these leaders honor their ancestors and families as they guide Sealaska toward a thriving future.

Karen Gunaa shaa Taug, daughter of Mary (Brown) Lekanof, is a mother and grandmother who has enjoyed connection to culture since she retired from a decades-long career in operations. Earlier this month, Karen graciously stepped into the role of Acting Chief Financial Officer at The Central Council of the Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (Tlingit & Haida).

Ka'illjuus (Lisa Lang), who is now a grandmother herself, said her fondest childhood memories were alongside her grandmother. Her loved ones are a source of inspiration in her commitment to future generations, which Ka'illjuus has demonstrated through a career in law and leadership. “Because I have great love for my children and grandchildren, there is absolutely nothing I cannot accomplish,” she said.

Morgan X'agatkeen Howard was raised in Yakutat by his great-grandmother, Susie Abraham. His belief in the power of connection and communications—which Morgan has translated into a career in public relations, telling stories about Alaska Native people and Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs)— is shaped by the moments they shared together.

Dr. Angela Saa Doo ou Michaud is a working mother who continues to cherish every moment with her children as she leads a dual-track career, sharing culture and tradition through her practice with the tribal health system. She was recently nominated for a National Indian Health Board (NIHB) Outstanding Service Award. “My mission is to help our people get back to the true health and wellness that has allowed us to thrive for over 14,000 years,” Angela said.

Sealaska board-endorsed candidate Dr. Angela Saa Doo ou Michaud fondly remembers early mornings as a child. Growing in Ketchikan, she and her dad would wake up at 4 a.m. to be the first ones out on the water and spend all day fishing.

Moments like these were just the beginning of Angela’s lifetime connection to her Tlingit culture and Southeast Alaska, a foundation which prepared her to serve her people in several ways: as a doctor and healer, an executive leader and, since 2020, as a Sealaska director.

For more than 15 years, Angela has led a dual-track career, sharing culture and tradition through her practice with the tribal health system. She is the first female Tlingit chiropractor and currently works as the senior director of Recovery Services with Cook Inlet Tribal Council.

The second shareholder descendant to join the board, Angela’s desire to serve comes from many sources of inspiration, including an awareness of evolving needs within our communities and focus on communication, community and connection to our culture and our lands.

"I’m motivated to continue supporting our shareholders and sharing with the world the strength and resiliency that our communities and region have to offer, “ she said. “I want to help Sealaska continue to grow in economic success as we work toward a better future, one in which both people and the planet thrive."

But above all, Angela has the heat of a healer. Her passion is to help people be the best they can be. “That doctor part of me is always going to show up,” she said.

Angela was just named as one of the National Indian Health Board’s Heroes in Health, an award which honors individuals or organizations whose work has made an impact on American Indian and Alaska Native health care, in appreciation of her service to tribal communities.

Sealaska was delighted—though not at all surprised—to learn that Sealaska Director Dr. Angela Saa Doo ou Michaud was named as one of Alaska's Top Forty Under 40 for 2022. She is an outstanding member of Sealaska's board of directors, a gifted healer and doctor of chiropractic and a passionate advocate for the needs and perspectives of shareholder descendants like herself. Michaud was called to serve on the Sealaska board through a recognition of unmet needs in the community of shareholders and an awareness of the changing landscape facing Sealaska and other Native corporations as shares become more diluted among multiple post-ANCSA generations.

"Dr. Michaud is an exemplary addition to both the Sealaska board and the Top Forty Under 40 list," said Sealaska President and CEO Anthony Mallott. "She is a model for Indigenous excellence and embodies the cherished value of giving back to her community at every level. Sealaska celebrates Dr. Michaud for this honor and recognizes the many tremendous accomplishments she has achieved so far. On behalf of all of Sealaska, I want to extend my warmest congratulations to Dr. Michaud and her family."

The Alaska Journal of Commerce recognizes forty standout young professionals like Dr. Michaud from across the state each year. This year saw the most nominations ever—288!—all of whom we applaud for their tenacity, excellence and spirit of service. To see the full list, visit @AlaskaJournal.

Congratulations, Dr. Michaud, on this well-earned honor.
