Michele Abramowitz’s beautiful diptych, “Well, Well (Bucket, Eels)”, is on view at the Vitsœ store at 17 W. 8th St, New York City, for the next few months. If you’re in the area, stop in to see the installation!

You must descend to enter TOPS. After stepping through its neon-lit threshold, you spiral down a narrow staircase and slip through a warehouse of refuse (old signs, a piano, scaffolding) until you reach an oasis tucked safely away from the surface world.

I’ve seen two exhibitions at TOPS and each brought a flutter of adventure. The most recent, Michele Abramowitz’s “Cognitive Dissonance or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying…” feels site-specific. The title nods to Kubrick’s film on nuclear absurdity, locating the work in a lineage of political, environmental, and psychological fallout.

TOPS once served as a coal chute, and much of its grit remains. You enter a boiler-like chamber, then pass through a massive, detonated portal blasted through the wall into a second room with a gleaming white epoxy floor. Raw concrete walls mottled by decades of use give way to a single immaculate alcove. The tension between ruin and refinement becomes the ideal container for Abramowitz’s language of contradiction.

Nestled into a corner and protected by a tangle of pipes, Sluice feels like a relic in situ. The surface of the painting shifts from rough, pilled texture to glossy, abyss-like sheen, compressing atmospheric gradients into a single plane. Darkness is interrupted by a whisper of violet and a streak of cyan—ventilation shafts.

In the triptych When Brothers Became Ideas, pale, fleshy fields are overlaid with smog-like veils. The sharply masked gradients contain soft abstractions. Paint gathers along the edges in undulating, geological ridges. A faint mark—like a finger clearing dust—returns the work to the tactile, the human, the imperfect.

Here is where Abramowitz’s work and TOPS fully meld. Installed on raw concrete, the paintings’ jagged edges read like excavated artifacts, objects that have survived an unnamed conflict. Built in strata— light, residue, the ghost of touch—they feel like remnants of a moment when dissonance dominates and clarity comes in brief, luminous interruptions.

Standing in TOPS, an underground chamber, surrounded by concrete and rust, you’ve entered a shelter built to wait out the consequences of history.

TLDR: visit @tops_gallery in Memphis

"But the imagery does not encourage particular readings, only the anguish and profound pleasure of making sense and nonsense from paint." YES YES YES!
One last week to see the show--closes June 28th.
