Notes from this year’s @iconconference , part 1! This was my third ICON conference and it was easily my favorite, bringing me back to a beloved past hometown filled with memories and friends, some of whom are pictured here. Last week I got to do something I’ve always wanted to do. Take a week off, rent a nice Airbnb only for myself, and work on my next book. I picked a town where a bunch of good pals lived (and somewhat magically discovered is where even more friends live) so I couldn’t get too reclusive and weird lol. Anyway, 10/10 recommend getting a space for yourself, focusing on a thing you like to do, going on relaxing walks for breaks, and seeing old friends. And still much work to do, but excited about my next novel… 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 📸

Back from @iconconference today, a little ragged, a little hoarse, with a suitcase full of beautiful cards, stickers, prints, and notes, so many notes. I’m scatterbrained this Monday morning, but I’ve got a lot of new things clicking and that feels great.

This year has felt more like an island than any other freelancing year for me. So I decided to go to ICON12 in Minneapolis to connect. And I did 💖 I loved hearing from so many creators from all different paths talking about the same things I’ve felt, like imposter syndrome, loneliness, fear, and burnout. It was an unbelievable comfort to know that even the most successful folks battle this crap too. I learned SO much, and I’ve got pages and pages of notes to sift through. I’ll share my main takeaways on my substack later this week, but in the meantime here are some Icon highlights:

🖼️“Olive Trees” by Van Gogh @artsmia totally made me weep and it weirded out the man next to me- sorry dude.
📚I took a seriously insightful publishing workshop with the sweetest and most encouraging art directors from @chroniclebooks - what a dream!
🎨My piece “Below the Water” was one of 80 incredible pieces included in the icon gallery show.
🛴I scooted EVERYWHERE. I accidently purchased a multi day pass (whoopsies) so I made the best of it. And seriously, it’s the best way to see Minneapolis!
🍜I ate wonderful noodles from all over the world- including my favorite, Bun Bo Xoa. If you have a good recipe, please send my way.
🥰Of course, the best part was talking with so many fun and talented people- I’m so inspired by you all!

Last month, a teacher at Congress Middle School in South Florida reached out to share how much her students love “50 Rappers Who Changed The World.” In addition to daily read alouds, several classes made door designs based on the book and these are the final results.

I’m scheduled to make a virtual visit to the school tomorrow, but these creations have made me even more excited to talk with these teens 😭

Look what I found at @cookshillbooks!!! Not one but *two* Fred Astaire vinyl records! I have some records of other people recording songs sung by Fred on vinyl, and I have a triple disc cd set of Fred singing, but I’ve never had Fred singing on vinyl, nor have I ever owned a soundtrack from his films. Now I’m back home I’m looking forward to spinning them on the record player!

Also got a Benny Goodman; I think this is my third Goodman vinyl, but you can’t have too much Benny (beautiful music, though according to John Dankworth’s autobiography he was a pretty odd fish)

And I got some goodies from @blackbirdcorner. The fortune cookies were a bit of a mistake - though I’ve found wisdom at key moments in my life from cookies, I could’ve done without the faux-Chinese improper grammar - but this book of Pocket Queer Wisdom is fascinating! Like I didn’t know some of these people were queer - I adore that quote by Eleanor Roosevelt, I had no idea she was bi!!! 😯💗💜💙
