Bachelorette won Best Art Direction — its only nomination, and it took the category outright. Michel Gondry's infinite-regress concept, a woman who becomes a book who becomes a show who becomes the story again. Samantha Gore's art direction beating Foo Fighters' Everlong and Garbage's Push It to take the win.

Gettin' Jiggy Wit It had 5 nominations and won Best Rap Video, beating Busta Rhymes and The Notorious B.I.G. Hype Williams building maximalist spectacle around Will Smith at the absolute height of his mainstream crossover.

Gondry's recursive art film vs Hype Williams' pure star power. This is the one to watch.

Had the pleasure of interviewing @michelgondry on stage for the @ciclopefestival
Well, I tried—he’s a one-man show—and let’s just say I provided the prompts.
The audience LOVED him and I didn’t embarrass my crew (last pic). So, mission accomplished.

Michel reached out afterwards to comment on two questions I asked; here they are, magic Michel in his own words:

„I realized that I forgot to say someting that maters to me about advertising:

1) I learned to directing actors in feature films( which is being a director) in doing the castings for add campains.

Part of the job is to pick the right actors and you see sometime 50 people in one day. So in 20 minutes you must find out if it’s gonna work or not. Sometimes we are so far from what we need that I have to be super fast and creative to get everything I can from the actor. there are not many lines and I need to get them away from there initial idea. A techinc i developped is to ask them to describe somebody else. Like a sibling, an uncle. They reveal much more of themselve than when talking about themselve.

2) I am a a big admirer of the painter Edouard Hopper. I saw an exibition of him and found out that at start he was a good painter, much in the vein of impressionist (or post) He didn’t have his style, his uniqueness. So he went to work in advertising. Few years after, he came back to his passion, painting, He had found his style. His personality. What made him famous.“

Gondry’s The Experiment Never Ends offered a fascinating insight into his world, taking us through projects past and present, from sleepless nights and synesthesia to absurd ideas, trusting his instincts and the insatiable curiosity that keeps him experimenting.

As part of C:FUTURE, Inada shared his perspective on the evolving creative landscape. Offering insights on a range of subjects from the importance of honesty and self improvement, his approach to Instagram, and investing directorial ‘flight hours’ in building readiness for the best creative opportunities.

Behind the scenes, recreating Michel Gondry’s iconic Kylie Minogue “Come into My World” video, without a motion control camera. Just a simple rotating watch display stand from Temu, an $8 gadget instead of thousands in rental gear. What started as a playful experiment grew into a personal homage to one of my favorite videos of all time. Pure creativity. Pure joy. All from simple tools, patience, and a lot of heart.
