Maria Rodriguez has made her senior year count for Utah Tech, anchoring the back line at left center back and playing nearly every minute of the fall. Across 822 minutes she has been the player the team leans on when the game gets physical. She has made 470 actions and completed almost 80% of her 288 passes. She has won 64% of her duels and 65% of her aerial battles, including perfect aerial performances against Portland, Westminster and UC San Diego. She plays with confidence, and her game-by-game numbers are consistent.
Her defensive instincts are what set her apart. She has 56 interceptions and 88 recoveries this season, and she reached double-digit interceptions twice, with 13 against Utah and 11 against CSU. In the Utah game she also won 8 of her 9 duels, and she won all 6 of hers against CSU. She backs that up with composure on the ball, completing 83% or better of her passes in three games and 9 of 12 dribbles. In a season where she has pushed to leave her mark, she has shown the toughness, the awareness and the leadership of a senior who wants to finish strong.
