Using art to imagine a zero-waste future ♻️🎨

Earlier this year, I partnered with @zoomlionltd and @thekirkkaine to celebrate International Day of Zero Waste at Otinibi JHS alongside students from Immaculate Conception School, Daystar Academy, Dovehill Grand School, and Royal Agape School.

Together, we used art to reflect on the world we live in today and the cleaner, more sustainable world we want to create. It was a reminder that no matter our age, we all have the power and responsibility.

When I was younger, I was probably happiest when doing something artsy like painting, knitting or playing the piano. Being at home this month (for the longest period since I left😱), I’ve had lots of time to go through old things and reflect on how my life has changed since leaving the UK, and since becoming a working adult.
I aim to be as creative as I was when I was 16, if not more. I’ll take my art equipment and sheet music with me to Japan, and get in touch with the artsy side I feel I’ve lost since growing up.

When I went home in September, I vowed to be more creative. I recently got a piano and restocked my art supplies but for the past few weeks, I had been staring at a blank canvas (maybe scared that I had lost my ability to paint and sketch 😂). Last weekend though, I had the pleasure of meeting @traenen_garten during a modelling job. Meeting her and other artists at an exhibition later that day gave me the final push I needed. (Thank you for reminding me how fun and freeing creating can be!)

So after 10ish years, I’m finally painting again - this time not for the sake of getting an A* in A levels, but to exercise my creative freedom.
In the mean time though, I’ll take a trip down memory lane 😆 These pages are from one of my sketch books from school, where I was exploring subject matter for the theme of “wraps”. Looking at this, the first thing I see is how it can be improved so I cringe a little - but now I try to remember that I was just a kid when I did this and that I should cut myself some slack 😂

Every Christmas I realise more and more how fulfilling it is to give handmade gifts. Painting with someone in mind makes it so much more fun. So, if anyone wants a painting from little old me, just ask ✨

Happy Earth Month 🌍 As an energy analyst, I've personally witnessed the challenges we face in ensuring access to affordable and clean energy for all. I painted this piece keeping in mind that we are seeing the effects of climate change, mainly in the communities of those most vulnerable, but on many levels choosing to ignore it. Now more than ever we need action, not words.

Whenever I reflect on my past work, I get a renewed sense of purpose to keep creating. Artists with intersectional identities have often been overlooked but in recent years this has been changing. We’ve come a long way but still have so much more to do..
