Join us for the opening of Zine* Together at Asia Art Archive in America today, 5–8pm!

Chen Luo and I had the honor of giving shape and form to this significant exhibition through its identity and exhibition design. We’re also excited to have our collaborative zine, Embodied Making As Collective Publishing (one of our first projects together), as part of the show.

Zine* Together is the first exhibition of its kind to examine Asian American zines not only as objects, but as actions—creative, collective, and relational. Drawing from Asia Art Archive in America’s Reading Room collection, this exhibition highlights collaboratively produced zines from 2010 to the present, alongside newly commissioned projects and prompts that trace zine-making as a mode of shared authorship and community building.

Zine* Together, itself a collaborative project, is organized by Claire Kim, Susanna Chang, Sarula Bao, Michelle Yee, Elizabeth Chung, Mary Y. Yang, Chen Luo, and Tasnima Tanzim. Exhibition installation by Wei Wang.

Many thanks to Claire Kim, Susanna Chang, and the AAAinA team for their trust and collaboration! We can’t wait for everyone to see the exhibition!

Highlights from the 11th Biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art, “Islam and Visual Culture in Contemporary Asia.”

The Symposium was co-chaired by Dr. Hala Auji from VCUarts Richmond and Hamad bin Khalifa Endowed Chair for Islamic Art; and Dr. Radha Dalal, Associate Professor and Director of Art History at VCUarts Qatar.

The keynote address was by Malaysian interdisciplinary artist Yee I-Lann, titled “The Surface Remembers: Decolonial Groundwork from the Archipelago.”

Her accompanying exhibition, “paths of the wind weave shadows bare bones of a mat”, opened at The Gallery at VCUarts Qatar and remains on view to the public through December 6.

A recording of the Symposium will be available on the Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art website in early 2026.

The Symposium took place at VCUarts Qatar on November 8-10.

#IslamicArt #ArtHistory #QatarFoundation #VcuArtsQatar #VcuQatar #VcuQ #Qatar #ArtsEd #VcuArts #vcu #symposium #HbkSymposium #AsianArt #urbanism #VisualCulture #IslamicArtHistory #ContemporaryAsia This is a group photo of twenty people (six men and fourteen women) posing on a low stage in front of a large screen. The screen has a magenta background with white text, which reads: "vcuarts" (top right), "THE HAMAD BIN KHALIFA SYMPOSIUM ON ISLAMIC ART" and the dates "November 8-10, 2025" (centered), and "Islam and Visual Culture in Contemporary Asia" (larger, centered).
The group is arranged in two rows:
• Back Row (Standing): Ten individuals in business-casual attire, mostly dark colors.
• Front Row (Seated): Ten individuals seated on the edge of the stage, also in business-casual and semi-formal clothing, including a mix of Western and South Asian styles.
Everyone is looking forward, and the overall mood appears professional and academic. The lighting is bright and focused on the subjects and the screen.

The building is a light tan/cream color with an imposing, ornate, recessed entrance framed in white stone.
A very large banner for "The 11th Biennial Hamad bin Khalifa Symposium on Islamic Art: Islam and Visual Culture in Contemporary Asia" covers the entire recessed wall area. The banner is predominantly magenta with white and dark text and features a pattern of stylized motifs at the bottom. The dates "November 8–10, 2026" are also visible.
The group is arranged in two rows sitting and standing in front of the banner. Everyone is dressed in business-casual attire. The weather appears sunny, and the overall scene suggests an academic or professional gathering at an event venue.
