“The long game”
•
I’d like to take a moment to share what I think it means to really play “the long game”
•
My training client, Gwen, is a great example of what this phrase means and how we’ve kept it as the focus for 3 1/2 years of working together
•
As you probably assume from the photo (📸 credit: @michelrenae ), Gwen has a lot on her plate. As a Mother, Wife, and Dental Hygienist, she’s not short on responsibility and activities
•
In her case, the way we play the long game looks like this:

*PROPER PHASING AND PERIODIZATION OF TRAINING - similar to how a coach would phase your nutrition, I phase her training. We’ve been through periods of strength building, physique focus, fat loss, and maintenance. I know that her family enjoys taking trips, so we use travel and vacations as a way to recharge and promote progress, versus them being “off track”.

*USING PROPER FUNCTION AS A FOUNDATION OF PROGRAMMING - with the many hats that Gwen wears, I ensure her program has functional movement at the heart of it. Yes, we work on aesthetics. We also ensure that she’ll be in a position to move and groove while still looking good. We’ve maintained a steady dose of core development, conditioning, and paid very close attention to her biofeedback as a way to know how to approach intensity.

*CONSISTENCY AND VARIETY - these sound like opposing terms, but both have been really key in the journey here. I already know Gwen is going to show up when she says she will. Once gyms went on lockdown, she and her husband started piecing together equipment and building a squat rack, pulley system, and more. No matter what the circumstances were, I knew that she was going to show up for herself everyday. We got creative with movements. We tried similar movement patterns from different angles, different tweaks, and have continued to keep things fresh.
•
Above all else, I can truly say that the most important component in playing the long game is understanding that it’s your race to run...no one else’s.
•
When I say “long game”, my focus is on training in a way you can sustain for the rest of your life.

Love the post so much by @michelrenae ....trying to get the same feels for this place. Please rub off on me (😫😭😂)
“I have totally fallen in love with this place. Every AA flight attendant since 1957 has gone through here. (Including kris Jenner @krisjenner )
If only these walls could talk. When this was my home for 6 weeks, I’d sit by the pool and imagine the scene Elvis-movie-style in the 60’s. One pieces and swim caps. The people whose lives have changed here, the lifelong friendships that have been made, the learning and preparation that has taken place here. The nerves I felt sitting in this lobby waiting for my group interview, coming for 6 weeks of life-changing training ...still so tingly proud to get to be here. Now the new “charm farm” is coming and this will all be gone, and yes change is good. I just want to photograph every inch of it to remember it the way it was.”
