Stephanie Zydenbos had a bold idea to get more local produce onto people’s plates year-round. Now the owner of Micro Mama’s has the new equipment to make it happen, by blast freezing and freeze-drying New Hampshire vegetables. Our field trip series made it to Maine! Last week we gathered up our network partners— farmers, funders, and many other food system professionals— to learn about two middle of the food supply chain businesses in Maine. Our goal was to see innovative ways these Maine businesses were helping their local food producers get food from soil and sea to the table and learn how to replicate their strategies in the Granite State. We toured @forkfoodlab in South Portland and enjoyed a lunch from one of their food business alums, @magnoterracafe, while learning about @mainefarmandseacoop’s projects— the Maine Marinara Project and and Maine Greens Intiative. Following we headed to @harvest_maine to hear how their taking seconds produce and by products to create healthy and delicious snacks! Stay tuned for more; we plan to bring all of our learnings from our tours through Vacationland to you during our December Network Cafe. And we will close out our field trip series with a trip to Vermont in January 🌱

Last week we invited some of our network partners on a field trip to explore the middle of the food supply chain here in the Granite State. Leaders from farm and food businesses, @unhextension, @nhagriculture, @nhsbdc, and @nh_food_bank and others hopped on a bus and set out to understand the crucial processing, aggregation, and distribution services that exist in NH and what is needed to support our local food system. We learned about six local businesses and organizations working with NH farmers and food producers to take their harvest from field to shelf (or table!): @genuinelocal, @trilliumfarmtotable, @micro_mamas, @tellmanhillfarm, @tuckawayfarmnh, and Sullivan County Conservation District. Stay tuned for more! Our Middle of the Food Supply Chain Field Trip Series will continue with a recap of our NH field trip during our November Network Cafe and with two more field trips in Maine and Vermont.
