Big news! 🏆 Brown for Science Diplomacy (BSD) just wrapped up a historic, record-breaking inaugural year!

Huge congratulations to BSD founders Melanie Ortiz Alvarez de la Campa @microbephd and Mai Huynh, who recently hit a massive milestone: officially becoming Ph.D.s! 🎓✨

They launched BSD to break down the walls of the lab and bring science into the community. From organizing Thanksgiving food drives to hosting local birders at the John Hay Library for Earth Day, they’ve proven that science policy and mutual aid go hand in hand.

Their incredible work earned the organization: 1️⃣ The 2025-2026 Graduate Student Group of the Year! 2️⃣ A prestigious microgrant from Research!America—a first for any student group at Brown!

Swipe to see BSD in action! ➡️

What’s next? As our founders pass the torch to the next generation of student leaders, BSD is looking for graduate students across all disciplines to shape the future of science communication in Providence.

Dr. Ortiz Alvarez is officially PhDone! 😭🇵🇷✨️🫂

As of April 10th, 2026, I'm the first doctor in my family!! I wouldn't have gotten here without the immense love and support from my friends and family ❤️

It took me so long to post this because I wanted to really take some time and let this amazing feeling sink in. But last night, I finally sat down to open all the presents and read all the cards I received. They made me feel so proud, not because of the degree, but because of all the people thanking me for helping them along the way! That's what truly matters in my eyes.

Next stop: Coming home as a doctor and AAAS
Mass Media Fellow! ✊🏾😎

¡Seguimos!🇵🇷🔥

I am thrilled to announce that I'm going to be spending my summer writing for El Nuevo Día as a AAAS Mass Media Fellow! 😭❤️👏🏾🔥

I am so grateful to everyone that has helped me achieve this dream. It's an opportunity that has been on my PhD "Bucket List" since I started in 2021. Being selected as the only Spanish-language fellow was just the cherry on top! 👌🏾✨️

Looking forward to growing as a science journalist and reconnecting with my home 🇵🇷🦠 ¡Seguimos! 🔥🥺✊🏾
