I've been interested in making biological-looking structures like these for a while. I made these following tutorials and inspiration from @microbi.xyz! You can see the base 3D object I used to create the more detailed designs in the 2nd video. I've already 3D printed the base object and am hoping to print more detailed ones too!

Living in Miami over the past four years has been such a quality of life improvement, EXCEPT that large open space is really hard to come by here. So why not just build an art studio on the beach? It’s why we are all move here anyway!

Over the past two months, I’ve been building a sand drawing robot that I can deploy and operate solo on Miami Beach. These are some initial experiments made with friends : )

I am so grateful to have been part of Pioneering BioMaterials 2025 at California College of the Arts — an inspiring gathering of scholars, colleagues, and friends exploring the future of biodesign, bioinspired design, living materials, biomimicry, and material innovation.

.
This conference and exhibition was an incredible opportunity to exchange ideas, share ongoing research from Jenny Sabin Lab, and collectively imagine the next generation of architectural building materials. I’m honored to contribute to a community that continues to push boundaries and shape new possibilities.

These coral-inspired soaps crafted by scientific designer Laura Maria Gonzalez, are redefining what an everyday object can be. The Coral Soaps collection uses computational algorithms that mimic nature, resulting in mesmerizing forms reminiscent of specimens you’d find in a marine biology lab rather than your bathroom.
-
Each soap, rendered in vibrant pinks, soft yellows, and mint greens, is a tactile, handheld sculpture inspired by coral species like Leptoria, Platygyra, and Agaricia. Harnessing parametric modeling, the soaps are digitally “grown” to echo the intricate ridges and valleys of real coral, transforming a simple hygiene product into a sensory artpiece. These ridges are not just stunning - they increase surface area for a better lather, provide gentle exfoliation, and help the soap drain efficiently, keeping it fresh and functional. Even the accompanying soap dish, with its organically latticed structure, mirrors coral skeletons and is designed for perfect air circulation.

Microbi Design’s Coral Soaps challenge us to rethink how computational design and biological inspiration can elevate the most mundane objects into functional art.
