My face at learning my feature script, Hard Break, had been accepted into the Gotham Project Market!!

Anyone who’s been around me for more than 5 minutes has probably heard me talk about this project 😅 I love it so much. I finished the first draft of the script almost a year ago to the day. So thankful for everyone over this past year who’s read a draft, listened to a pitch, or jumped on board this crazy train to help me get this made.

We’re thrilled to announce Amanda L. Andrei (@theamandalandrei) as the commissioned playwright for East West Players’ 2028 sports play! As shared in our 61st Season announcement, her new work, REDPOINT MY HEART, will be one of three featured plays at EWP’s 2027 bi-annual New Works Festival.

Inspired by the thrill of Olympic climbing and the questions it raises about identity, struggle, and connection, Amanda shares: “With its competition at the Long Beach Climbing Theater in 2028, the L.A. Olympics describes climbing as ‘a dynamic and explosive sport that sees athletes demonstrate endurance, power, creativity and coordination to scale climbing walls.’ I also see it as a relationship between you and yourself. Who are you on the wall? Who are you when you struggle? What does the rock have to teach you? How do other people help you, and how do you trust that they’re there to catch you? These are themes I’d love to explore further in this play, especially when it comes to intimacy, attraction, and vulnerability. And while I see the major dramatic question of the play being, ‘Will our heroine fall in love?’ I also see an overarching theme and question as: ‘Everyone has a climber inside them. What does it take to bring them out?’”

Actually this is going on main for archival reasons cuz I want to remember how I felt this past weekend in New York. It was my first time traveling solo with my child, first time bringing them to my favorite city on earth. We went for Zazafest to commemorate 1 year since our beloved @ohyeadiana_’s passing and to be with community and celebrate their life. It was the weekend between the Knicks winning and dem socialists sweeping the NYC election, the first summer since Zohran became mayor. My friend @saraelise333 told me people are calling it the Summer of Joy and it’s true you can feel it everywhere, New York at its very best.

I wish Didi was here, they would’ve loved it. Didi was always casting spells, for community, for the queer future, for joy as resistance, for healing our bodies, for remembering ourselves as soft creatures. Didi contributed to so much of the art and magic in New York, I wish they could see it this summer, experience the healing balm the city is casting on everyone, the renewed hope and joy coursing through the air. I wish they could receive back some of the magic they so generously gave out their entire life, cuz it feels like the future they fought so hard for is finally arriving. They would’ve loved being here this summer, cuz it would’ve brought us all back together, and all they wanted was for all of us to be together.

I miss Didi, I miss New York. It’s hard to be back without feeling constantly nostalgic, it’s weird to be back and not see Didi, but I am letting myself receive the medicine from this Summer of Joy. Even if it’s just in small doses, even if it is mostly from afar. The magic of this summer is a seed that I will carry with me and preserve. I will use it to plant something for the future. I will take it out when I need to remember what it feels like to be alive and to remember that our lives have meaning. A reminder that sometimes we are the fertilizer for a garden to grow, this is a seed that will remind me that sometimes the things we plant do not bloom until after we are gone.🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
