Ep. 055 - In this episode Sarah talks about her father being a Vietnam war vet and thanks him for molding her into the woman she is today. Sarah grew up around firearms & with PA being a big hunting state she quickly learned to respect & appreciate them. She is a certified Range Safety Officer & like her kids she recommends you teach your own children firearm safety & how to shoot at a young age. She also goes in-depth on her non-profit Hold My Guns and how it was started out of a tragedy. Her non-profit hopes to help those when they need it most.

Tolktober Day 8: Pipe

The Hobbit begins and ends with smoking. In the very first description we get of Bilbo Baggins, he is puffing on an “enormous long wooden pipe,” and at the end of their adventure, Bilbo hands Gandalf a jar of tobacco so they can unwind together. Pipes in Middle-earth are more than just the background detail they might first seem, and many key sections of The Hobbit and LOTR are framed through smoking. The pipe is an image of relaxation and indulgence in Middle-earth, representing the Hobbits’ love of peace, and when they embark on their quests, it becomes a small taste of home away from home. When Bilbo is lost in Gollum’s cave, the first thing he does after finding the One Ring is to look for his pipe. In LOTR, when Merry and Pippin discover a store of Longbottom Leaf at Isengard, it’s a scary indicator that spies are at work in their homeland, but it’s also a chance to indulge in an old pastime.

But pipes represent not only home but also friendship. In Rivendell, Bilbo presents Merry and Pippin with Elven-made pipes "bound with fine-wrought silver" and with pearl mouthpieces. Later, after Gimli complains about the “fine hunt” Merry and Pippin have led them on, Pippin restores the debt by gifting Gimli his spare pipe, after which they all sit and smoke together in silence after the turmoil of their respective battles. Tolkien himself was seldom found without a pipe in hand, and thus they appear in his works as a symbol of comfort. When sleeping along the pass of Cirith Ungol, Samwise wakes with a fright from a dream in which he is looking for his pipe. The realisation that he is without such comforts is what emphasises the horror of their surroundings. It’s a reminder that LOTR often places emphasis on the humble joys of life (food, friends, smoking, gardening), particularly where the hobbits are concerned.

“It gives patience, to listen to error without anger.”
#Tolktober day 8 is Pipe.
My father started smoking pipes in the late 2000-aughts. Smoking to me symbolizes warm nights reading in the shop, smoking pipes surrounded by machinery and sawdust, the old fm boombox tuned into the local classical station. Siblings from afar are drawn near. Outside the dark window is a blanket of clean white isolating the homestead among fields of grain stubble kindly left by farmers to prevent the roads from drifting over.

I’m sure Tolkien had similarly sentimental memories associated with pipes and tobacco.

Keep up with @rogueprintco and @tolktober_ for the rest of the month to see some great LOTR illustrative content!
