Growing our own teachers, one classroom at a time.

MDE just awarded $70M in Grow Your Own grants to 74 districts & charter schools across Michigan!

This funding helps current school staff become certified teachers — building a stronger, more local teacher pipeline so every student learns from a qualified educator who knows their community.

From Ann Arbor to Suttons Bay to Detroit Achievement Academy — Michigan schools are investing in the people already showing up for students every day.

The Community Conversation on Bullying is excited to welcome Mr. Shyam Thakker. “I was born in Kenya and moved to the USA after HIgh School for my education and career. I have a BS in Allied Health & Behavioral Sciences from Wayne State University and 2 Masters degrees from Eastern Michigan University. One in Education and the other in Educational Leadership. I have a beautiful daughter who is my inspiration and motivates me to not only be the best father that I can be, but also a better educator. I taught Science for 16 years and am now a Behavior Specialist and Consultant for the Dearborn School District. I was voted as the #1 Educator in North America in 2019 and was nominated for a Presidential Award in 2021 ans 2022. I also received a letter of commendation from the White House and was recognized by Governor Whitmer, and two different State Representatives for my excellence in the field of Education. In addition to being an Educator, I am also a Zumba instructor and the founder of Desiboy Fitness Nutritional Supplements, and Bollywood Dance Fitness. I teach this at LifeTime, and use this to engage students and staff. I go around various schools to help with self care when needed.”

#NMUYoungWildCats has begun! Dawn and I drove separate and thank goodness! By the time we got to Raco we had to turn around because a student’s bag and bedding was left at school! We were able to catch up and meet them after lunch at the falls and do a little sightseeing with 6th grade. We’re checked in and having a little down time before dinner and tonight’s activities! #JKLBahwetingAnishinaabePSA #NMUCharter #NMUWildCats
