It’s been 5.5 years since I moved 2000 miles away from my family, to a place where I knew no one. 🌴 I’d never even visited California before. As a writer, I thought, what better adventure? Well, turns out you need a very strong heart for journeys such as these. Two nights before I moved here, I cried myself to sleep, wondering how legally binding an offer letter was…and if it was too late to cancel everything.

WHAT WAS I DOING?

My first week in LA, I burned the toaster cord in the toaster. Yup, not a great start. My first day of work, I was like a puppy, so excited that my teeth were chattering the whole day I was FREEZING cold.

Weekends were rough, but to remind myself I wasn’t alone, I started writing down the names of everyone I met at work to remind myself that there were so many possibilities for friendships.

Over time, the people at work truly became my family. I had aunts and uncles and sisters and cousins. We were all in this thing together. We hung out after work, and even during the weekends.

In my time here, I cycled through 3 churches, 5 weddings (one was my own!!), countless baby and bridal showers, and one all-defining breakup.

And through it all, I just couldn’t believe the life I had built. It is an odd thing to be new at a company; it is powerful to be one of the OGs, and to know everyone. It reminds me that we are resilient, if only we are able to squeak a small but mighty “Yes.” California became not just a destination. It became home, person by person.

Today is my last day at the job that made me a graphic designer (and eventually a Senior Graphic Designer). It made me see myself as capable: someone who maybe HAD burnt a toaster cord or two in her past, but knew better now. 😉

This ending is bittersweet, but I am eternally grateful I said yes. It opened up an entire world for me. It’s where I met my husband, my best friend, and my entire community of friends.

It changed my life.
