JOZI aMUSE DAY 3 HIGHLIGHTS: ART & CONTEMPORARY CULTURE - AN INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM WEEK PROGRAMME 🚌🎨💿

A packed bus, a city full of stories, and Jozi’s finest on full display.

Day 3 of JOZI aMUSE Festival of Museums started at @constitution_hill, where young and old gathered bright and early before hopping onto the iconic @citysightseeingsa Red Bus for a full day of art, creativity, memory and culture across the city.

First stop: (@fhatuwanimukheli & @justicemukheli) Studio Mukheli in Braamfontein, home of the My Loves Collective. We explored their incredible exhibition and had the privilege of meeting the Mukheli brothers before heading to @44_stanleyavenue for a surprise visit to (@thelibraryo) The Library of Things We Forgot to Remember, a nostalgic sound and visual archive reflecting on Black resistance and memory.

Then it was on to @witsartmuseum_wam, where we explored exhibitions including 1976 at 50 and joined a walkabout with Theresa-Anne Mackintosh for Now Is Not Forever, a powerful showcase of her multidisciplinary practice spanning three decades.

Next stop: @johannesburgartgallery for the opening of Reframing Freedom: 50 Years On, reflecting on 50 years since the 1976 Youth Uprisings and the evolving meaning of freedom through art.

From there, we headed to @standardbankarts Gallery for JAG Homecoming, celebrating important works returning to the collection. And we closed the formal art journey at the @rogerballencentre for Photography, where @rogerballen himself took us through the space, sharing its history and creative journey.

Then came that golden hour moment. Back on the bus, riding through Joburg as the sun went down, taking in the city one last time before our final stop at @sumthing_sumthing.jhb .

And because Jozi doesn’t know how to end a good day quietly, we went into the night with a Sip & Paint in the dark.

Then the music took over for SEEING SOUNDS: From galleries and archives to the streets, the sunset and the dancefloor, this was Jozi’s finest on display. Day 3 was one for the books. What a time we had! 🚌🎨❤️

Inyathi Ibuzwa Kwabaphambili – Mapping Our Heritage

“Inyathi ibuzwa kwabaphambili” is a Xhosa proverb that means “wisdom is sought from those who came before.” It is a call to honour, listen, and learn from the elders—the keepers of knowledge whose experiences shape our understanding of the world. This exhibition draws on that spirit, rooted in respect and humility toward Southern African Indigenous knowledge systems.

Hosted at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, Inyathi Ibuzwa Kwabaphambili explores JAG’s historic beadwork collection, a key part of the Southern African Traditional Art Collections. This exhibition unpacks the origins of the beadwork, the makers behind it, and the deeper cultural, spiritual, and social meanings each piece holds.

Through both community-rooted and digital approaches, the exhibition maps Indigenous ways of learning and explores trade routes as alternative wayfinders—tracing how knowledge, culture, and craftsmanship have travelled and evolved.

The exhibition is inspired by the gallery’s collection, its staff, and the vibrant communities of bead workers surrounding JAG. It aims to bridge the gaps between Indigenous knowledge and institutional narratives, challenging the hierarchies of the education system, scholarship, and museum culture.
