For week 4 my of @artcenteredu @designmattersca course “Design Futures: Lessons from Science Fiction and Social Justice” I was so thrilled to welcome my friend, @kennedycenter Citizen Artist, Documentarian, Public Speaker, and World Builder - Dr. Mi’Jan Celie Tho-Biaz

@mijancelie is a powerhouse, she most recently completed her 2023 - 2024 Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship at @thehuntingtonlibrary, researching @octaviaebutler’s archives. Students are studying lessons from Octavia’s work and I’m currently prepping them for a visit to the archive. Mi’Jan agreed to come share about her practice and some of the learnings blossoming from her time with Octavia.

To respect Mi’Jan’s practice and privacy I won’t be sharing content from her talk. But what I can highlight is the way that Mi’Jan came into our class as her full self.

A question she left our class with: if archives could be a site to honor and care for BIPOC ancestors - how might we provide conscious care?

More over on this weeks substack, if you know you know ➡️ head over to read it all

In 2016 with the most wonderful group of artists and world changers at The Banff Centre! We were partnered up to support each other through trying a new thing over a year. And much innovation ensued! Some of us wrote a grant and went to Santa Fe Art Institute for a residency there and recorded video and made drawings, and all of us have connected and dug deep, some of us have reconnected in different cities and collaborated on projects or talks or gatherings. It’s been an amazing thing to know these humans are out there making their magic happen. ❤️❤️❤️✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾#PodLiminal #NewFundamentals #residency #Flashback (in the shadow, taking our picture was our pod member Jerry!)

We explore how contemplating our heritage can make us feel more belonging, gratitude, and confidence in what we’re capable of achieving.

In yesterday's episode, I interviewed @mijancelie to hear how she’s traveled the world for the last 15 years by utilizing artist residencies. 🎨

You may be surprised to learn these opportunities aren’t just for artists in the usual sense but creatives like writers, scientists, and even psychoanalysts! 👩‍🔬

Mi’Jan not only gives us the breakdown on artist and creative residencies and how to find these kinds of opportunities within our own niche, but...

👉 Why travel can be the best gift for your children

👉 What a burlesque dancer taught her about grounding practices (and advice for public speaking)

👉 How ritual and daily activities can help you while traveling

👉 The four questions she asks herself every year for clear vision

👉 Advice for leveraging your skills and interests to travel

...and so much more!

🎉 Honored to announce that I’ll be joining the inaugural fellowship class of @newamericaorg’s Us@250 initiative! I’m so excited to be in community with such incredible artists, storytellers, and community leaders, all focused on building a more inclusive, democratic, civically engaged America.

🎬 During the fellowship, I’ll be continuing to develop and produce Bean Thinking (@abeanthinking), my upcoming video essay series exploring how we can work towards an America that achieves liberty and justice for all. Thank you, New America for your support!

Exciting news! I'm a fellow @newamericaorg, where I'll be conducting a long overdue national conversation on the presidency.

I've wanted to be a fellow at New America for years, but being a part of the inaugural class of Us@250, a new fellowship in anticipation of America's 250th, is particularly meaningful to me. Our collective memory hangs in the balance.

We hope to reimagine the American narrative based on three core themes that have long defined my work:
1. Pride in the nation’s progress from its origins.
2. Reckoning with historical and contemporary wrongs that have caused the nation to fall short of its ideals.
3. Aspiration for a multiracial, inclusive democracy.

I met my cohort in DC last week and left energized by their projects--which I hope you'll look out for, too!
