A small world story. Back in February I was in London for the West End premiere of @comefromawayuk. After seeing a matinee of another show I stopped in a Pret a Manger to use the bathroom and their wifi. I noticed a guy with a Come From Away pin, that the West End was giving out, on his back pack. I asked him about the show and he shared that he was a big fan. He told me he was visiting London from Beijing. He then looked at me and said I looked familiar. Ok, the randomness of this encounter rendered familiarity virtually impossible in my mind. He then asked if I had recently visited the Communications University of China in Beijing. Which, I had a month and a half before. He said he recognized me from photos of my visit on WeChat (Chinese social media). M Jay is a dance teacher at the university, and regretted he was not their the day I visited. He was in the original Mandarin language production of CATS, and is also a choreographer. He loves musical theatre like I do. I mean what were the chances of this meeting!! So we took the first photo at Pret. This afternoon I had lunch with M Jay and his partner May a musical director. Over hot pot it was incredible to connect and hear more about musical theatre in China. We also talked about exciting future collaborations, Come From Away, Broadway, West End and some of my favourite colleagues teaching and researching musical theatre, Laura MacDonald, Joe Deer and Tyran Parke!
