10 years since my first Pride. a few months prior, Obergefell v. Hodges had overturned state-level bans on same-sex marriage while I was registering for my first semester of college classes. I rolled up to Piedmont Park that year as a very passionate ally, lol. for many of us, that ruling was and is the bare minimum of LGBTQIA equity. 10 years later, as that ruling is set for appeal and protections for trans people are rolled back across the United States, I look at my changing city and my very queer community with the same belief that all we have ever and will ever have is one another. while most know the story of Stonewall, fewer know that one month later, Atlanta had its own Stonewall, when a screening of Andy Warhol’s “Lonesome Cowboys” (a homoerotic film) was violently raided by the APD. A few days later, protesters with The Great Speckled Bird (a counterculture and leftist newspaper in Atlanta— and one of the greatest archival digs I can encourage you to research) would also be violently targeted by police. these moments would birth the Georgia Gay Liberation Front, and in the years following, Atlanta’s first official Pride March, and the Atlanta Lesbian Feminist Alliance. I think of these activists, of the leatherdykes organizing direct mutual aid amidst the AIDS Epidemic of the 1980s, of the gays cruising through our once booming scene of disco clubs refusing to drink screwdrivers in protest of the anti-gay rights activist Anita Bryant serving as a brand ambassador to the Florida Citrus Commission. I think of our wonderful, and very much still-in-motion Charis Books, which served as a critical ‘third place’ to these organizers during its time in the hippie haven of Little Five Points. our history has always been anti-cop and anti-war and it has always been as rife with humor as it is has been with hard work and heartbreak. when the place I love changes around me, I think of the history of our community and our present community, and I find a more familiar company. the path is not as untrodden as it often feels. we’re just as queer and just as here. TLDR: check out @invisiblehistoriesproject and @charisbooksandmore for more queer Southern company 🍑
