It is a big day having my son Luca join me for the latest @redbar_toronto event, his very first time attending a @redbarcrew meetup! After wearing this the last two days, I picked it up to put it away and then it hit me: I havent shown love to this amazing timepiece in quite some time even though this is tied for my most worn watch ever! When Christopher Ward released the C1 Bel Canto half a decade ago it created tsunami sized ripples across the whole watch industry. A chiming watch? Typically high 5 figures going into the 6 figure territory was suddenly affordable to the layman. Add in an insanely unique (even in this day and age) floating dial and this was a recipe for immense success that boosted Christoper Ward into the stratosphere amongst collectors. When Jas offered me an allocation for his limited to 99 pieces of this stunning phoenix edition based on the colors of his McLaren the offer was impossible to pass up. This is not only an incredible timepiece but an amazing daily watch and one that I have reached for hundreds of times since I received it a few years ago. To me it is still the best one.

I think @chriswardlondon has got a lot right with the new C1 Loco Classic, and it’s another example of just how far the brand has come in recent years. The clean, symmetrical layout is what immediately caught my attention. I particularly like the choice of colours, the grain-sandblasted dial finishing and the exposed mechanics at 6 o’clock. There’s a lot to appreciate here, especially when you consider the watch comes in at under US$8,000. However, I do have a couple of reservations. At 41mm in diameter and 14.1mm thick, it’s a little larger than I’d like. I think something closer to 38–39mm, with a slimmer case, would make this a much more appealing watch on the wrist. There’s also the obvious MB&F influence. While I appreciate the technical ambition and execution, I can’t help feeling that some of the design language is a little too familiar. That said, I think Christopher Ward deserves credit for making this level of watchmaking accessible at a price point that would have seemed unlikely not too long ago. What do you think? Is the C1 Loco Classic a genuine alternative to much more expensive independent watchmaking, or does it borrow a little too much inspiration? #watchnerd #watches #watchesofinstagram
