⚾ HE THREW THE BAT 🧡💙

📅 October 22, 2000 — World Series Game 2, Yankee Stadium

106 days after Roger Clemens hit Mike Piazza in the head with a fastball, the two met again in the World Series. It took one inning to explode.

Piazza fouled off a pitch and his bat shattered, the barrel flying toward the mound. Clemens picked it up and threw it at Piazza as he ran up the line.

The benches emptied. Nobody was ejected. Clemens later said he thought it was the ball. He was fined $50,000.

⚾ The incident: top of the 1st inning, Game 2
💥 Benches cleared — zero ejections
🔥 The fine: $50,000
🏆 Clemens that night: 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 9 K

Should Clemens have been thrown out of the game? 👇

The 2000 Mets were a National League Powerhouse. They were led by the bats of Mike Piazza and Edgardo Alfonzo and the arms of Al Leiter and Mike Hampton. A host of great supporting players pushed the team over the top to make it to their first World Series since 1986. There they lost a hard fought battle to the Yankees in 5 games.
