This was the TURNING POINT. In 2010, Vaughn Gitting Jr. worked with Need For Speed on a new in-game car that RTR Vehicles would bring to life. It became the RTR-X, a ‘69 Mustang with drifting attitude. RTR and Gittin Jr. sourced the chassis and body, while Andy Blackmore handled design. Extreme to look at and wild to drive, the RTR-X proved the team could build head-turning cars. Soon after, this DNA would go on to inspire the legendary Hoonicorn build.

What an amazing weekend to have scored another win for the R8 LMS GT3. In its first outing in competition “ Ella” as she has become to be affectionately known. Put on a clinic with Jacob at the wheel. The team is not new to R8 LMS GT3 platform as the groups experience goes back to 2010 when the cars arrived on US soil. A amazing weekend , with great competition ( over 30 Porsche GT3, Cup, GT3R and GT2RS race cars.) The field was stacked with the best on the west coast. Sunday’s race would have the team qualify in 6th, take the lead by about the 5th lap and would hold the lead for the remainder of the race. An amazing result for the new car and driver . One thing is for sure - This is one very fast Audi driven by a very capable young talent. #audisport #audir8 - It’s experience at the top levels of motorsport that trickles down to our road car service maintenance & performance upgrades for your R8 . This is the experience that sets us apart and why R8 owners trust there cars to the team at RSAutowerks. - Have an Audi R8 or RS car call 949 200 9000 to book your next service or email service@rsautowerks.com * Many thanks to POC for their hospitality and organization of a spectacular event .

Head to Racer.com/culture for an excerpt from the new book ‘Ready To Rock’ by Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Mike Spinelli, on what it took to build RTR Vehicles into what it is today. It centers around the pivotal 2010 season, where Gittin Jr. locked in and won the Formula Drift championship, all while hustling to make RTR “a real company.” In the end, the year 2010 took RTR Vehicles from a dream and an idea, to a title-winning race team with its own development program and dealer network. They even debuted a modified ’69 Mustang concept, called the RTR-X, that set a new direction for old-school style mixed with modern drift aesthetics. From that point on there was no looking back, and the rest is history. Check out Racer.com for the full article, and preorder your copy of ‘Ready To Rock’ today at CarraraBooks.com.

Honored to see my 1989 photography of Luigi Colani’s iconic, visionary designs back in print in the latest Road & Track (Issue #35: “Weird”).
It was such a thrill to open the magazine and see these images again, paired with a fantastic deep dive by Mike Spinelli. Colani’s work was so far ahead of its time, and I’m so glad these designs are getting another moment in the spotlight. Be sure to pick up a copy and check out the feature! Also attached are spreads from the original article that ran in 1990!
