Happy 10th anniversary to b’lieve i’m goin down…! I remember pretty vividly the serpentine & bicoastal way this album was recorded…  I started in my hole in the wall rehearsal space in Philly called the Red Room, where I recorded the basic tracks to one of the earliest written songs, which was a banjo song called “I’m an Outlaw.” Then we took that down to my bandmate, Kyle Spence’s studio in Athens, GA, where we made a few trips & recorded “That’s Life, tho,” “Stand Inside,” and “Dust Bunnies.”

From there, I flew out to Joshua Tree to record at Rancho De La Luna and to sit in with Tinariwen. It was so inspiring, it was like a sign to bring out my California posse (Farmer Dave Scher and Stella Mazgowa) and bring Rob Laakso to engineer and play bass. So, really, this record’s got the East Coast / West Coast duality. (Maybe a little heavy on the West Coast when all is said and done).

Some of our desert magic tricks were songs like “Kidding Around,” “Lost my Head there,” and “Wheelhouse,” which was like a bridge to a new dimension, influenced by playing with Tinariwen. Hearing it back on the speakers, I knew that was the magic moment that the record was sounding this new kind of way to me

On the next trip to LA, we recorded at Pink Duck Studios in Burbank and added some more overdubbing magic, before another return to the East Coast where I wrote a song inspired by the magic we were achieving in LA (“All in a Daze Work”).

Before the next trip back to LA I was feeling pretty lost, until Rob Schnapf called up Chris Lombardi and said he wanted to work with us. I got excited when I heard he worked with Beck on Mellow Gold, and then he turned out to be the best guy & someone I’ve worked with on every record since in some form together.  So to get ready for the trip, I wrote a hypnotic fingerpicker song at home in Philly that just came to me, which ended up being “Pretty Pimpin.” We worked on it for more than a week with Rob, trying lots of variations, and long story short it turned into my biggest hit song so far.
