Arts, Culture & Theatre Awards 2026, at The Mayfair Hotel, London by Eastern Eye 🎨

A spectacular event! The evening brought together artists, theatre directors, dancers and practitioners across all art forms recognising their contributions. I was blown away by the outstanding talent and vast range of impressive work across each art form category! Congratulations to Eastern Eye on yet another brilliant - and very inspiring - evening of celebration!

#romficfriday

As my life ramps up for the launch of the @ukasianfilmfest, I’d like to share a dream.
I began my career at the BBC in television many years ago and later taught Film and Media Studies to 16–18-year-olds.
So I have worked up an outline for a Netflix series, and dreamt…after all I’ve been told reading my books is like watching a movie.

📚❤️📚❤️📚
The books I would most love to see adapted into a TV series/film are My Heart Sings Your Song and Where Have We Come, both set in the Midlands and London. Because of the diverse cast of characters—people of all colours and creeds—and as I write from my own experience of straddling British identity and my East African Gujarati Asian heritage, there will be blended families too.

When @saffron.amatti interviewed me to her blog this question was easy to answer.
I didn’t want to clog her posts, so I only pick eight people for the graphics.
Trust me when I say I’ve thought long and hard of who to cast in these roles, some well known.

An the other roles ;-
Sarladevi - Meera Sayal
Ramprakash Raja - Bhasker Patel
Rajesh Raja - Shazad Latif
Rupa Raja - Nisha Aliya
Rita Parekh - Neelam Gill
Dr Sunil Parekh - Riz Ahmed
Julie - Iris Law
Peter McCauley - Damson Idris
Ravi Patel - Rish Shah
Divyaba - Nina Wadia
Smita Solanki - Varada Sethu
Dick Downs - Felix Mosse
Jane Crawford - Suranne Jones
Anne-Marie - Viola Prettejohn

As for the production I’d want South Asian, Black and Asian Creatives, because we’ve learnt over the years, the stories we want to tell don’t fit with how producers select projects. Unconscious bias plays a huge part in their selection process even though there is a token representative in their team. Too often the screenplays and manuscripts from diverse voices are discarded with an encouraging note mentioning that the plot, narrative and characters are relatable, only to be followed with,
I’M NOT SURE WHERE IT WOULD SIT IN OUR PORTFOLIO.

🌌🤞🏼🌌🤞🏼🌌
Listen up universe.
Send me producers looking for a British story, centred around blended families with East African Gujarati heritage.
Stories that bind us.

AWARD-WINNING SHORT FILM NR 3 ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL

What really happens behind Codeswitch?

This isn’t just a film — it’s a conversation, a collision of worlds, and a search for identity.

In this interview, Producer @lakipattapola ,together with his writers and cast @isobelwood_ and @mikhail.sen Sen, open up about belonging, identity, and what it really takes to build a film while navigating different cultural and creative spaces.

From unexpected conversations with other creatives, to those chance encounters that quietly shape the direction of a project — sometimes it all begins with something as simple as a drink at a pub.

And that’s exactly what Codeswitch explores: not just fitting in on screen… but everything that happens off screen to get there.

A film shaped by real voices, real experiences, and real questions about where we belong.

🎬 Codeswitch has been nominated for several international film festivals.
