NTWANA PRESENTS: BLACK SWAN

In a society that often flattens identity for legibility, Ntwana is embracing multiplicity with a core belief that identity need not be singular, coherent or easily digested. The city of Johannesburg provides context for this point of view. It’s a place of overlapping realities, holding within its limits worlds that rarely share a frame.

Art Deco buildings rise from the inner city, while the glass-and-steel towers of Rosebank and Sandton project a different view of life. Between them, the city unfolds through leafy residential streets, dense apartment blocks, industrial structures and the improvised rhythm of street-level commerce. It’s a city whose identities are multiple, sometimes overlapping, sometimes divided by the structures that give the city its shape.

Graphic artist 10239 on En Pointe, the collection’s prints:

“I made En Pointe, the textile graphics for Ntwana’s Black Swan collection, during one of the most disorienting weeks of my life, and I believe that week lives in the images.

The collection drew on the film Black Swan, so I refused to start designing until I had watched it. I watched it after more than 24 hours without sleep, coming off the TOYTOY birthday rave on the night of a lunar eclipse. On the dance floor that night, sober (I’m in recovery), I opened my eyes to a moving, portal-like pattern on the floor. It echoed a lattice I had drawn in a journal years earlier. My partner warned me not to watch the film in that state. I went ahead on purpose, treating it as a kind of method acting.“

In this interview, @ntwanaofficial co-founder Mikhail Brown speaks to us about rethinking luxury through a distinctly South African lens. From Johannesburg’s underground creative scene to international fashion capitals, the brand reflects on how technical craftsmanship, cultural specificity and personal taste can coexist without compromise.

What emerges is a portrait of a label expanding the language of South African luxury through precision, restraint and conviction.
