Artist Statement:
I use cakes as my subject matter since they reflect my love language: baking. Cakes are a testament of time, care, and attention. The intimacy that begins from measuring the first ingredient to gifting the cake to someone I love. Through my exploration of cakes as a subject, I recognized how my femininity is layered within them.
Their ornate decorations and extravagant piping highlight their femininity. Though built on structure, cakes still maintain a delicate nature, making them easy to discard even when they’re meant to be savored. I often see myself in the cakes I create as I reflect back on past relationships and what it means to feel easily discarded.
I look outward, realizing that my personal connection to cakes extend into a social symbol that impacts women. I have used my observations to further develop cakes as a metaphor to the objectification of women in media. By emphasizing the beauty of cakes to attract the viewer, I imitate how women are presented for consumption by critiquing and mocking the male gaze. Through my confectionary compositions, I aim to remind viewers that we eat with our eyes first.

Scotland, you were a whirlwind in the very best way! So much dancing, so many incredible shows, new friendships, new shows on the horizon, late nights, sore everything 😂 and memories I’ll carry with me forever.

I worked my booty off to get here, and getting to actually LIVE it was pretty damn special.

Feeling exhausted, grateful, inspired, and very lucky. 💜
