Rather than functioning as a conventional gallery or commercial office, The Office reimagines the workplace as a site of artistic production, exchange, and cultural imagination. Drawing on the histories of immigrant entrepreneurship, artist studios, talent agencies, independent publishers, The People’s House, and the commons, the project treats the office as a living system built through relationships, knowledge, labor, trust, and exchange.

Ivanova calls this approach ((retro)) protocol art: an evolving framework in which systems of care, collaboration, and cultural production become visible as material. Correspondence, mentorship, negotiation, advocacy, intellectual property, strategy, emotional labor, and resource-building, ordinarily invisible infrastructures of creative work, become the substance of the artwork itself. Each activation adds new contributions, conversations, and collaborations to this evolving system.

Situated in Chinatown, a neighborhood shaped by generations of immigrant enterprise, resilience, and independent networks, The Office draws on the spirit of the traditional small business, a place where people show up, relationships form in person, and value emerges through proximity and exchange. Against increasingly virtual and automated models of cultural production, the project proposes a human-centered network rooted in presence, trust, and collective intelligence.

Sensing Summer is a peripheral activation of Sensum Fanzine, the cross-sensory publication and curatorial platform co-edited by Anna Novakov and Natalia Ivanova. The artists in the pop-up are not contributors to Issue One or Issue Two of the fanzine; instead, the project extends Sensum’s exploration of sensory practice beyond the printed page and into a physical encounter, offering another platform for engaging artists and audiences through embodied experience, material experimentation, and alternative forms of perception.

Within The Office, a project centered on systems, exchange, and human connection, the pop-up becomes a temporary gathering around the senses: touch, scent, memory, intuition, and social encounter. @sensum_fanzine

SENSING SUMMER

A two-week pop-up exhibition by Sensum Fanzine, activated within The Office

August 14–28, 2026
Art Agency Reframed / The Office
Chinatown, NYC

Art Agency Reframed presents Sensing Summer, a two-week pop-up activation by Sensum Fanzine, unfolding within The Office, a conceptual installation and evolving project by artist, curator, and writer Natalia Ivanova.

Located in Manhattan’s Chinatown, The Office operates simultaneously as an artwork, a working space, and a living framework for artistic production, exchange, care, and collaboration. Drawing from the histories of immigrant entrepreneurship, artist studios, talent agencies, independent publishing, and the commons, Ivanova’s ((retro)) protocol art makes visible the often-invisible infrastructures behind cultural work: relationships, mentorship, advocacy, negotiation, intellectual property, emotional labor, strategy, and resource-building.

Sensing Summer extends the sensorial inquiry of Sensum Fanzine beyond the printed page and into physical space. Rather than a conventional gallery exhibition, the project invites a slower, more embodied encounter with art, through touch, scent, memory, intuition, materiality, and social exchange.

The participating artists are not contributors to Issue One or Issue Two of Sensum Fanzine. Instead, this pop-up creates a parallel physical platform through which Sensum continues its exploration of artists working beyond the purely visual.
