Milan Kunc - Pop Renaissance
▫️3. 10. – 17. 1. 2027

Returning to where it all began.

As always, Anthology Film Archives feels like a Heaven of freedom and inspiration. It reminds me of my journey in film, which began in Vienna at my father’s Filmmuseum, continued with my work as an actress alongside Claude Chabrol and Peter Patzak, and later brought me to New York, where Jonas Mekas and Hollis generously welcomed me into their Broadway loft.

I helped organize Jonas’s archive, worked at Anthology—then still on Wooster Street—cooked Viennese dinners, and they became my New York family. Beyond the many wonderful people I met there, I watched films almost every day. When I screened my own work there last year, it felt like coming home.

A few days ago, I held a test screening of my new short film, THEY BURN WITCHES, DON’T THEY?, at Anthology Film Archives, in the presence of Jed Rapfogel and John Mhiripiri. It was exciting to see it on the big screen for the first time, and the sound was fantastic.

The film is currently part of an installation @kunsthaus_muerz in Austria, featured in the exhibition My World on Fire, curated by @mariotberg ❤️‍🔥 @myworldonfire888 @jedrapfogel @jonasmekasofficial @austrianfilmmuseum #peterkubelka @gertiefroehlichestate @eleonoraaauersperg #exhibiton #marielifröhlichfilmmaker @studiothomasbaumann @rudimolacek @milankuncart @rsloy @elkesilviakrystufek @jonathan_meese @marinaabramovic_______ @judy.chicago @stock_christian_art @rosaotberg @elisabeth_von_samsonow @rafaelaproell @karin.kneffel.art @ed.templeton @martinparrstudio @_robertmuntean @pollockfineart @niveswidauer @madelinevonfoerster @manfred_bockelmann @eisenbergerchristian

Yesterday, during an Advent brunch hosted by Anne Frechen, who wanted to show us the large painting of the cubist Abbey Road cover by Moritz ®️ from 2015, which she has owned since 2017, there was a significant exchange between two WORKS ON SKIN artists. Flight 3 artist Moritz Reichelt exchanged his APs with Flight 2 artist Roman Frechen (artists receive 4 artist proofs from us, which they can dispose of as they wish – and finally, all of them have been produced. We expressly welcome artists exchanging among themselves). The connections are manifold: Roman is the son of Anne Frechen and pop art artist Milan Kunc, who was Moritz Reichelt's friendly teacher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. When Anne was pregnant with Roman, she and Milan visited the studio of Flight 2 artist Mark Kostabi in New York, and there are photos of that too. It remains to be mentioned that Anne was the favorite student of Flight 1 artist and mentor Timm Ulrichs, who was virtually sitting at the table as a stone guest. What a memorable afternoon! Thank you, Anne!
