#milantoast #marioegi EGI S.R.L. ITALY MILAN TOAST GASTRO TOASTER (~1970). Designed by Mario Egi and Andrea Ivo Novi. Made in Italy. Italian craftsmanship can also be found in machines like this: a large professional toaster with a housing made of anodised aluminium sheet with a stainless-steel/chrome frame, two stainless-steel clamps with Bakelite handles, crumb tray, separate heating circuits and a mechanical short-time timer with two red lamps – built for continuous use. The brand goes back to the company EGI, founded in Milan in 1948 by Mario Egi and Andrea Ivo Novi, initially producing parts for espresso machines. In the late 1950s this led to one of the first sandwich toasters with clamps for bars and cafés; from the 1960s onwards the machines were sold under the name Milantoast and are still manufactured near Milan today. In Italian bars, the quick ham-and-cheese toast made from two slices of pancarrè became the standard – ordered simply as toast. Parallel to the toaster line, EGI, Ivo Novi and Fiorenzato were already pushing espresso technology. Around 1953 they reportedly built a fully automatic commercial machine with an integrated hydraulic group and two Fiorenzato grinders mounted on the sides – a kind of all-in-one espresso station shown at the Fiera di Milano and protected by a joint patent. A monster of a machine. The fact that a toaster like this still works after decades is no coincidence, but part of the company’s attitude: steel instead of disposable plastic, simple mechanics, spare parts instead of replacement. Technology that has been doing its job for decades. Milantoast states explicitly: “The best way to avoid unnecessary waste is not to produce it in the first place.” This kind of hardware reminds me of Massimo Osti’s / Stone Island’s world: labs, dye plants and machines that run for a long time, stay precise and quietly form the basis for everything. And also of the garments that come out of it. For me, a warm toast and an espresso from the Italian machine is the pragmatic starting point. Mostly every day. #1970 #milantoast #egi #marioegi #andreaivonovi
