The way Africa is understood around the world is closely tied to the stories that travel beyond its borders. Film has the power to challenge assumptions, preserve cultural memory and reveal the many realities of African life that a single narrative could never capture.

When African creators tell their own stories, they offer the world a deeper understanding of the continent, grounded in its own experiences, histories and perspectives. What we choose to document today will influence how future generations interpret our past and understand who we are.

Speaking at the Africa Soft Power Summit 2026 in Nairobi, @mildredokwo brought her experience as a film director and producer to a discussion on Africa’s creative economy, exploring what it takes to turn creative influence into scalable economic infrastructure.

The biggest asset many creators own isn’t a building or machinery. It’s intellectual property.

So why is it still easier to finance physical infrastructure than creative infrastructure?

This panel challenged the way Africa values its creative economy, from funding and ownership to distribution, investment and long-term wealth creation. If creativity is one of the continent’s greatest economic assets, shouldn’t the systems around it reflect that?

Join us in May 2027 for the next edition of the Africa Soft Power Summit, and stay tuned for more highlights from #ASPSummit2026.

There has always been a quiet concern among many Nollywood loyalists about where our cinema is headed. As the industry continues to gain global attention, there is a growing temptation to borrow foreign storytelling styles, sometimes at the expense of what makes Nigerian stories uniquely ours.

That is why we often return to films like Karashika, Games Women Play, Sharon Stone, and Blood Sisters. Those films weren't perfect, but they understood the Nigerian audience. They reflected our people, our humour, our family dynamics, our language, and our realities. Growth should never require us to lose our identity, and On Different Grounds understands that perfectly.

Writer and producer @nicolendigwe alongside the legendary director @mildredokwo @glazedlens and a talented writing team, have delivered a cross-cultural family drama that feels genuinely Nigerian. It beautifully captures the complexities of elite family life while embracing the familiar chaos, humour, and emotional depth that define our extended families.

The casting is one of the film's greatest strengths. @jennifereliogu and @bobmanueludokwuofficial are exceptional as the divorced couple at the heart of the story. @osuofia_nkemowoh and @ebelleokaro remind us why they remain icons, delivering effortless comedy with performances that feel authentic and lived-in. @patrickdoylemedia also brings his trademark presence and gravitas.

The younger cast more than hold their own. @uchemontana and @ifeanyikalu1 give the romance sincerity and warmth, while @uchejombo and @bammybestowed light up every scene they appear in. The inclusion of @vineetrainaofficial, @nimesh_diliprai, @abenaakuaba, @ozeembadiwe and bis twin and @aproko_doctor adds an international flavour without taking away from the film's unmistakably Nigerian identity.

On Different Grounds is proof that Nollywood can be global without trying to be someone else. It shows that premium production values and international appeal can exist alongside authentic Nigerian storytelling.

Go to the cinema. Buy a ticket. Support Nigerian storytelling. 🍿🎬

EVERYTHING GOES SOUTH FOR SOUTH AFRICA!

You know the African ancestors have left the chat when the entire continent—led by Nigeria waving receipts from the Anti-Apartheid struggle—is aggressively screaming "Go Canada Go!" 🇨🇦✈️ It turns out that $1-0 World Cup knockout victory by Canada wasn't just a win; it was an ancestral eviction notice over broken brotherhood! 🍁🤫

Right on cue, Stephen Eustáquio fires a shot that transforms into a massive block of polar ice, freezing Bafana Bafana solid on the spot. The referee blows the final whistle, and the gods of soccer officially concur with the verdict.
As the stadium empties, an flight announcement plays over the speaker:
"Attention Bafana Bafana, your flight back to Jo'burg is boarding immediately. You must get you home before the June 30th 'Quit Notice' deadline kicks in tomorrow!" ✈️💨

@paradox_pope says so!

Creators cannot unlock the full potential of Africa’s creative economy alone. Investors, policymakers, platforms, brands and governments all have a role to play in building an ecosystem where creativity translates into sustainable economic value.

Progress will be measured by the commitments made, the partnerships forged, the policies enacted, the capital deployed, and the opportunities created.
