Sometimes the best work ruffles feathers.

In 2022, four University of Alabama students were asked to make Call of Duty celebrated by mainstream culture. Miles Neto, Erin Brown, Matthias Meyer, and Morgan Egan looked at the brief and decided to do something else entirely. Instead of selling war games, they created the Backbone Awards – the industry’s first student-to-industry award for purpose-driven advertising and campaigns for good.

What began as a response to a brief from The One Club’s Young Ones competition is now a teaching resource and industry standard for socially responsible advertising. Every year, one Bronze Backbone and one Aluminum Backbone go to the campaigns with the most votes, proving this industry can stand for something beyond the bottom line.

Over 30 Minerva students run the Backbone Awards from start to finish – researching nominees, producing the physical awards, and building the platform that lets anyone with an .edu email cast a vote. Students like Baylee Byrd, Mary Katherine Gunn, Cassie Farnham, Maggie Sullivan, Noelle Smithers, Ainsley Overholt, and Rachel Narbo have pushed it forward. But it takes the full team of ~30 to get it all together each year.

Voting closes March 1. Cast your vote at backboneawards.com
