We’ll also be moving to a late and an early show. One with doors at 5:30, one with doors at 8. Those who already have tickets, please let us know if you want early or late. We’re very much looking forward to hosting Ken Vandermark, Kenton Loewen and James Meger on Oct. 22. Vandermark is a world renowned saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and improviser working in free jazz and improvised music. He was a 1999 recipient of the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” grant and has played with many of the world’s finest improvisers, having longstanding collaborations with artists including Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, Paal Nilsson-Love and Paul Lytton to name a few. Kenton Loewen are longstanding members of Vancouver’s improvised music community and have played with many, many other world class musicians. Very excited to announce that Allotropes will be opening for the trio of Ken Vandermark, James Meger and Kenton Loewen at an Orange Light event in Centennial United Church's historic sanctuary.
This one will be a special one for me, as Vandermark's work from the mid-90s onward inspired and altered my thoughts on and approaches to improvisation and composition.

We are very excited to announce the October 22nd performance of renowned Chicago-based saxophonist/clarinettist/composer/improviser Ken Vandermark in performance with Vancouver musicians James Meger on bass and Kenton Loewen on drums. This event will take place in Centennial United Church's sanctuary (directly above the Round Room. Enter via the main church entrance). This performance is a coproduction with fifty fifty art collective.
Vandermark is a MacArthur Fellowship winner who has been active internationally since the 1990s, performing and recording around the world with such notable improvisers as Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, Mats Gustafsson, Paal Nilssen-Love and Terry Ex and Andy Moor of The Ex.
James Meger has performed with many notable improvisers, including Darius Jones, Wayne Horvitz and Kris Davis.
Kenton Loewen's work crosses many boundaries and has performed with many notable musicians, including Gord Grdina, Michael Moore, François Houle, Mother Mother and Dan Mangan.
Allotropes is the post-bop trio of saxophonist/clarinetist/composer Shane Krause, bassist Trav Short and drummer Miles Fuller. Their music draws inspiration from free jazz, post-bop jazz, free improvisation and avant-garde composition. They perform largely Krause's compositions, mixed with some free improvisations and compositions by inspirational composers including Carla Bley, Ornette Coleman and Steve Lacy.

This part is made possible thanks to kind support from CRD.

Tickets in link in bio.
