‼️This video is rated TV-MA for language!‼️

Today is the birthday of the birthday of the incomparable Carole Lombard. Too often, Carole’s life is framed by her horrific death, in the crash of TWA Flight 3. But she was so much more than the circumstances of her death. A stellar actress, a comic pioneer, one of the best-liked people in the industry, and—a title she would enjoy—the best cusser in town.

Here she is showing her skill in that last category, in an outtake reel from MY MAN GODFREY. Screening at @milibrary this Friday! Ticket link in my bio. Come see Carole at the top of her game, and learn why we all love her so very much.

I first saw MY MAN GODFREY when I was living in Paris, homesick for California and making almost daily pilgrimages to the Rue Christine theater to get my classic movie fix. Many of those films became subjects of my first blog posts, when Backlots was in its infancy. Since then, MY MAN GODFREY has become a comfort film—I know every line and every facial expression.

I’m excited to be bringing it to Movies at Mechanics’ this Friday! There is a great deal to say about it, and I’m looking forward to seeing this glorious comedy on the big screen again—so many miles from where I first saw it.

Come watch it with us! Ticket link in my bio. I have a feeling you’ll love MY MAN GODFREY as much as I always have.

It was a thrill to screen THE AWFUL TRUTH last night in front of a packed crowd at @milibrary . The audience howled with laughter. Afterward, someone noted how special it is to feel a crowd’s laughter wash over you. Indeed, it’s is one of my favorite parts of the job. This scene elicited a particularly uproarious laugh.

Join us next week for the equally madcap MY MAN GODFREY! There’s lots to say about this one, so don’t miss it. Ticket link in my bio!

More antics from THE AWFUL TRUTH, showing at @milibrary this Friday. "I guess it was easier for her to change her name than for her whole family to change theirs." 💀💀💀

Oh friends, this is going to be a fun week. We’re showing THE AWFUL TRUTH at @milibrary on Friday, and I had to make the difficult decision of which clip to show you. I think that means we’ll have many clips over the course of the week, because this movie is SO GOOD. Irene Dunne and Cary Grant at their very best.

Join us for lots more bad dancing Friday, October 2 at 6 PM, at the Mechanics’ Institute of San Francisco! Ticket link in bio.
