School vs. Playโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ it can be both!

๐Ÿ™Œ Top Ten Ways for Playful Learning
ย
๐ŸคชBecause I started with twins and my younger two are 18 months apart, they all play really well with each other. I don't often do free-form, imaginative, creative play with them. โœŒ๏ธBut here are my two favorite ways to play:
ย
๐ŸŽฒ Board Games
I come from a big board gaming family, and I mean strategy games (not those games of chance like Sorry or Life). Strategy games are an amazing way to build logic and critical thinking skills.
ย
๐Ÿ“‘Give your emerging readers a desire to learn to read so that they can play the game without you whispering what the card says into their ear!
ย
โ˜‘๏ธ I did an assessment of our board games recently (numbering over 100 ๐Ÿ˜ณ) and many of them are geography related. Not that there are always maps, but the game introduces an aspect of culture or place, often historically.
ย
๐ŸŒŸHead over to my link in bio and get my FREE "Guide to 50+ Geography-themed board Games." They're organized by age, so it makes a great gift guide, too!
ย
๐Ÿค”The bonus to teaching your kids lots of board games?
๐ŸฅนThey start playing them at any time, even without you!
๐ŸฅนThey start making up their own rules!
๐ŸฅนThey start creating their own games!
ย
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽจCrafting
The thing about play is that is has to be optional. If I'm hit with creative inspiration as we read a kids book, I always present it in the form of a question:
Would anyone like to...
๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ทmake a Korean Tal (mask)?
๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฑ paint a Boฬ€goฬ€lan Malian Mud Cloth?
๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ณ make a toothpick model of a ger (Mongolian home)?
ย
โœ‚๏ธ crafts are like hands-on worksheets. Fine motor skills, attention to detail, following instructions, fine arts, and sometimes even a subject like geography or science!
ย
Check my stories to see how people are using crafts as PLAY.

โžก๏ธ now that weโ€™ve redefined play, what is your favorite way to play with your kids?

Is this the year for your Great American Road Trip?! Spring Break and summer travels are gonna be here soon! Where are you headed?

You can do it!๐Ÿš™๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒŽ

The four kids and I have logged months in the mini-van while Dad worked at home. Texas to Yellowstone, Georgia to California, Georgia to Philadelphiaโ€ฆ Weโ€™ve driven it! You could say Iโ€™ve learned some lessons along the way.

Hereโ€™s the truth.

We are not the family who
๐Ÿฅsings along to folk songs or
๐ŸŽ’makes the little activity bags or
๐Ÿ–‡๏ธmoves the little clip along the paper road or
๐Ÿฅฌpacks nutritious meals in our little cooler.

Road trips are stressful enough without all the unreasonable expectations and next โ€œgreat ideaโ€.
Figure out how to keep your sanity with the fussing and the โ€œare we there yet?โ€. ๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Wait, didnโ€™t I say road trips are fun? ๐Ÿ˜€

Put on a movie.
Strap on their headphones.
And let them have some family giggles and shared stories and togetherness.
Kid movie party.๐Ÿฟ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ“บ

It doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™re missing out.
It doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™re lazy.
It means youโ€™re realistic.

While theyโ€™ve been giggling their way through Little Rascals for the 13th timeโ€ฆ
๐ŸซYouโ€™re enjoyed some Mom-only snacks
Andโ€ฆ
๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡นYouโ€™ve visited Italy during World War 2 or
๐Ÿ”ซYouโ€™ve solved the latest murder podcast or
๐ŸŽงYouโ€™ve jammed out to your grown up music
Andโ€ฆ
๐Ÿ˜You will arrive at the hotel in a better mood.
โ€จBecause you know the loud and crazy only gets worse once they get in that confined space.

Arenโ€™t road trips fun? ๐Ÿคฃ

If your car doesnโ€™t have a movie player, rig one up with the iPad or spent $100 to get one. Itโ€™s allowed!
