One year ago today, we released Witness with Pulitzer Prize-nominated Armenian-American composer and documentarian Mary Kouyoumdjian on @phenotypicrecordings !

The works featured on @marykouyoumdjian ‘s first portrait album exemplify her use of the arts as an amplifier of expression, often integrating testimonies from resilient individuals and field recordings of place to invite empathy.

Art met craft here in the most divine and moving way.

Walking through Lee ShinJa: Drawing with Thread at BAMPFA felt like entering a story told in fiber — appliqué, embroidery (which the artist calls “drawing with thread”), deconstructed industrial fabrics, tapestry, loops, found objects, and gestures that invite you close… then pull you back to see the whole.

Each series unfolded like a path, one work leading into the next, scale shifting from intimate to monumental. I found myself leaning in to study the amber tones, the stitches, the quiet additions of thread and object — and then stepping back to feel the narrative as a whole.

It was an honor to move among these works in a space that truly allowed them to breathe. The experience followed me into my dreams, returning me to my college years at the loom and to the many weaving traditions I’ve encountered across the world — a shared language of patience, skill, and generosity.

I’ll be pondering this exhibition for a long while — gathering inspiration and feeling that familiar itch to get my hands into a project of my own.

✨A powerful meeting of art, craft, history, and imagination.

I invited this talented human and dear friend - Lenny Gonzalez, @millennyem - to play music in conjunction with my current solo exhibition, “the things we hold, the things we carry”…a collaboration in the sense of a call and response. Lucky us he said yes. Lenny came to my studio as I was working on the five large paintings for the show, and has spent time experimenting with the spatial sonic possibilities of the gallery.

I can’t wait to experience what he has in store and would love to see you there.

The gallery will open at 6:30p for you to view the show and get settled. Please note the venue has limited capacity so it may get cozy but we’ll do our best to accommodate everyone.

For more information or questions DM any of us: @cr8vcat @millennyem @birdhousegallerysf

Lenny Gonzalez is a Bay Area musician who explores acoustic and electronic sound in solo performance as Eagle Friend Radio and in collaborations with @scottamendola @erikellestad and #nontactus . He is widely known for his portrait and commercial photography of musicians and culture.
