A more than 5 stars stay at Heartstone sanctuary is how I spent my holidays and I couldn't be more grateful. Mud baths, good food, gym sessions, German lessons and lots of cuddles! Ok... the stars are the ones in the sky every night (magical to see), the mud baths are unexpected and they include pee and poop, the language lessons are reading the packagings and calendars in the house, the physical exercices are mucking out for hours and I prepared my meals. But I wouldn't exchange this for any luxury vacation! Right now, I'm heartbroken that one of the best weeks of my life just came to an end and I'm already missing my new furry friends. The animals taught me a LOT, way more than I could have imagined. They made me smile so much, they tolerated me talking to them non-stop (poor babies, they must be happy I'm gone) and they offered me an enormous amount of love and hugs. They're smart, gorgeous, loving, sensitive and much more. They should have been killed but they're alive, thanks to Nía, in this amazing sanctuary. Volunteering there was wonderful, I don't even have the words to tell you. I'm not the same person I was when I arrived, it was short but intense. My story is beautiful because I helped for a few days, but Nía does this on her own, 365/6 days a year no matter the weather, the fatigue, the pain. And she has to worry about paperwork, finding the money to continue to care for the gang, etc. This is no fun. She does it for so many good reasons, but also because she can't stop. Humans have failed these innocent souls that just want to live, she gave them a home, the opportunity to thrive, to walk, to play, to eat, to enjoy the years of life they deserve. Dear Nía, vielen Dank for rescuing and taking care of them. I know you would like to do more, but what you've done so far is already huge and inspiring. Thank you so much for welcoming me!
