ANIMATION COMPETITION | Third Section | Thursday 17.09 | 19:30 | Children of the Black Sea | Duration: 10’20’’ | Director: Mihaela Mîndru @mimindru

In an isolated sanatorium on the shore of the Black Sea, a girl discovers a strange world governed by mysterious rules and unusual treatments. Little by little, she adapts, makes friends, and learns to live in this place suspended in time. One day, feeling unwell, she is sent to a small white house, far from the other children. There, the boundaries between dream and reality begin to blur. One night, together with her two companions, she decides to escape toward the sea. But once faced with the horizon, a truth becomes clear: being a child is not so simple, their freedom is not assured, and their story is far from the adventure they had imagined.

🪞LADIES FIRST: Women about women | Non-competitive program

(UA in comments 👇)

Moving between documentary, fantasy, horror, comedy, and sensual reverie, these films enter spaces where private experience becomes strange, funny, frightening, and liberating.

Across generations and borders, women confront social expectations, family ties, shame, illness, loneliness, grief, and patterns that keep repeating.

✾ Meet the Residents of Villa Eläintarha ✾

Mihaela Mîndru is a pluridisciplinary artist from Moldova, based in Paris. Working across animation, painting, drawing, music and event organising, she explores individual and collective memory through motifs inspired by her personal and cultural folklore. Her films, books and images act as sensitive archives, where memories and emotions intertwine to deconstruct and reimagine the past. She was invited to come to Helsinki by Under the Leaf Book Fair, that took place on June 5-6 at Uniarts Helsinki, where she held a conference about her work and a screening of her animation films, as well as being an exhibitor to the book fair.

Le 𝐣𝐞𝐮𝐝𝐢 𝟏𝟖 𝐣𝐮𝐢𝐧, le Sterput donne carte blanche à 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛 𝐋𝐚𝐛 (@club_lab ) pour son exposition 𝕃𝕠𝕦𝕡𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝔾𝕝𝕒𝕤𝕤 ! ♡
