What helps when a story feels too difficult to write the usual way?

A different approach to craft can open a way forward. In *Tangled Up in Blues: Writing Through Trauma*, four memoir writers will share how they work with difficult material from different creative perspectives.

@nikwalker28 will look at structure and form, including how interweaving different threads can help us see our own story through a new lens.

@miminichter will speak about buried trauma, processing difficult experience, and giving yourself permission to write your truths.

@kerrybneville will look at the instability of memory and how form can reflect fragments, gaps, notes, photographs, and other pieces of a story rather than forcing them into a tidy chronology.

@laraineherring will explore speculative memoir and the possibilities that open when we shift the lens through which we view a story.

There are many ways into a difficult story. The important thing is finding the way that helps you tell yours.

On October 14, we’ll share the approaches they’ve found through craft, experience, and their own writing, for you to be able to write your story.

Still carrying a story you haven’t been able to write?

At twenty years old, Mimi Nichter was taken hostage during a hijacking in the Middle East.

For years afterward, she carried the experience mostly in silence. She had been socialized to “move on,” so even when the story stayed with her, she rarely spoke about what had happened.

Much later, writing gave her a way to return to that experience and begin asking what the silence itself had shaped.

In Tangled Up in Blues: Writing Through Trauma, Mimi will talk about what it means to approach a buried experience with care, give it language, and decide what you are ready to put on the page.

For memoir writers, her story opens an important possibility: what might change when something you have carried quietly is finally given words?

If this touches something in your own writing, we’d be glad to have you with us for this free NAMW Memoir Panel on October 14, 3–4:30 PM PDT | 6–7:30 PM EDT.

Come join us ❤️ Comment “BLUES” and I’ll send you the registration page.

Another month, another book stack! 📚 July’s 4 books were pretty good. A little bit of everything this month, including one nonfiction read, and thankfully no real duds. Briar Club is a little lengthy, but I love Kate Quinn.

Great to have a CHOCOLATE CROISSANT in the new @carlsbadvillagebooks with author @miminichter author of Hostage and author @sweavermph who wrote Bittersweet. This is a glorious store with something for everyone. It was great to see a bookshop brimming with life and both the croissant and the company were great! #memoir #newbooks #bookstores #carlsbad #encinitas

My review: I am just mindblown after reading this book. The courage, and strength that it took during this time. The uncertainty felt. The fear carried day after day while waiting it out. The drastic changes in life during this time as well as the lingering trauma. Just so much to go through. The moms with kids. The children.. The way people did whatever they could to help each other. Just uplifting. It was a powerful memoir. I flew through it so fast because I just got so engulfed in them it and needing to see how it ended.

On the eve of its first anniversary, “26 Seconds” has been named a recipient of the Next Generation Indie Book Award — in a tie with the unforgettable memoir “Hostage” by @miminichter — in the Memoir (Overcoming Adversity/Tragedy) category. ✈️

And the celebration doesn’t stop there — my dear friend and gifted author @martyrossdolen was named a finalist for her moving memoir “Always There, Always Gone.” Feeling grateful and honored to stand alongside such powerful storytellers. 📚♥️
