Hey, what’s up, hello 👋

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Hello, my name is Mimi-Isabella and I am a Construction Materials Engineer. I have a degree in Civil Engineering from the university of Portsmouth where I specialised in Structural and Geotechnical engineering!

My story is different, I "fell" into Engineering! I had a chance encounter with a friend who took me to one of this lecturers when I was studying for another degree (not engineering) and the rest is history.
Whilst at university, I fell in love with concrete, it's my favourite construction material! I love it's complexities and how the composition can be manipulated for its intended use!

My role as a Materials Engineer entails reviewing concrete and material specifications, managing materials testing, conducting site investigations to ensure the materials used in projects are suitable for the project and if not, I provide recommendations on which materials to use.

I love engineering because, as engineers we are constantly learning. The industry is soo fast paced and I love keeping up with the latest innovations and technology!
Being on site is soo empowering, most days I am the only woman on site but it's never held me back! I love learning from the other engineers and personnel on-site who are very willing to help with my professional development! I have dreams to be a Chartered Engineer. *FUN FACT*: Cement and concrete are NOT interchangeable! 😁

I has such an amazing day at the @londonbuildexpo!! I was a 'Diversity In Construction' ambassador and loved all of the panel talks that I attended! Fantastic day of networking with people in the industry of all levels!⠀
⠀
To be nominated as one of the most inspirational and influential people in the UK"s construction industry and appear on the 'Humans of Construction' gallery really reinforces my love for the construction industry and motivates me more to encourage people into a career in construction! To be nominated amongst CEOs, directors of organisations is an amazing feeling! ⠀
⠀
It was also amazing to finally meet the @goconstructuk team (who are AMAZING)!⠀ Lastly, thank you to @wearemcalpine for opening me to various opportunities within the industry, I will forever be grateful! ⠀

Thank you for being part of my #TakeoverTuesday, I hope you enjoyed it!

I have thoroughly enjoyed my career in construction and would strongly advise everyone to see it as a potential career path. Construction requires a variety of different skills, not just engineering. Be open, be bold and be brave!

Finally, thank you sooo much to @goconstructuk for having me! I hope everyone enjoyed it and learnt a little bit more about Materials Engineering. If you do have any further questions about my journey into construction, Materials Engineering, University of Portsmouth and/or Sir Robert McAlpine, please feel free to follow me on Instagram @mimiisabella_ and Happy Black History Month!
