Suspended above the hillside, the Chemosphere challenges the idea of what a home can be.

Designed by John Lautner in 1960, the residence appears to float effortlessly above the landscape, balancing engineering, sculpture, and architecture in a single gesture. More than six decades later, it remains a testament to Lautner’s visionary approach. Where structure becomes poetry and the boundary between nature and design dissolves.

An icon of California modernism.

FARNSWORTH HOUSE – LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE

A modernist icon. Built in the late 1940s along the serene Fox River in Illinois, the Farnsworth House redefines the idea of a weekend retreat. Every line, every plane, every wall of glass whispers Mies’s philosophy: less is more.

Minimal steel. Expansive glass. An interior that flows seamlessly into nature. It’s simplicity elevated to perfection, a space where architecture dissolves into landscape.

Farnsworth House is not just a home—it’s a statement, a masterclass in restraint and elegance that continues to shape modern architecture today.

Blue Dream house

A sloping fibreglass roof and a glass facade characterize New York studio Diller Scofidio + Renfro’s first completed single-family residential project.

The home was completed in 2017 by Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) in East Hampton for Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit founder Julie Taubman and her husband, businessman Robert Taubman.

"It is really surreal and magical in the whole; the whole roof just feels like it's floating."

Sheats–Goldstein Residence (1961–1963)

Conceived by John Lautner, protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, this residence stands as a radical statement of organic modernism on the hillsides of Los Angeles. Carved into the sandstone terrain, its sculptural concrete roof — punctured by 750 skylights — casts a shifting constellation of light that animates the interiors throughout the day.

Lautner envisioned the home as a complete work of art, designing everything from the structural geometry to the bespoke furniture, lighting, and detailing. Concrete, glass, leather, and natural textures converge in a seamless dialogue between architecture and landscape.

In 1972, James Goldstein became the visionary owner, collaborating closely with Lautner for decades to refine and expand the residence while preserving its original vision. The result is a living icon—part sculpture, part shelter.

Today, the Sheats–Goldstein Residence forms part of the LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) collection, a testament to California modernism at its most visionary.
