On May 30, our community came together for Written In: Our Stories, Our Schools, Our Movement, a celebration of the students, families, educators, advocates, elected leaders, and community partners advancing the movement for more comprehensive and truthful education in Washington.

Together, we reflected on the progress made this legislative session around SB 5574 and reaffirmed our commitment to ensuring that students learn a fuller and more accurate understanding of the many communities that have shaped our state and country.

The afternoon featured keynote remarks from Senator T’wina Nobles, inspiring student presentations, performances, and a thoughtful panel discussion moderated by Angela Bahng featuring William Jackson, Scarlett Luo, Lua Pritchard, and Rep. Janice Zahn. We also celebrated the graduating seniors whose leadership continues to move this work forward.

While SB 5574 did not receive a final floor vote this session, the movement made meaningful progress and elevated important conversations across Washington. More importantly, the gathering demonstrated the power of students, families, educators, and community members working together to advocate for change.

“These small interactions were, in reality, manifestations of the model minority myth, a stereotype that flattens Asian Americans into a single basket and obscures our lived realities. My individual experiences represent a broader, more dangerous pattern for all Asian Americans in Washington state. There are structural roots to this problem, and they start with what we choose to teach, or rather, what we choose to not teach.”

Mindy Dong’s testimony makes clear how stereotypes like the model minority myth are reinforced when our histories are missing from the classroom. SB 5574 is about truth, dignity, and belonging in our schools.
