MINERO: THE BURRITO THAT REFUSES TO BE A SIDE NOTE

A really good burrito can make a lasting impression. Minero’s made mine downtown: huge, crunchy on the outside, and the kind of thing you remember long after you’ve finished eating it. An ambitious object to pick up with two hands. Entirely worth the effort.

The soft tacos belong in that conversation, too. So do the margaritas, which are reason enough to pay attention to the drinks menu. And the mezcal? My vote for the best in town goes here. That’s a personal verdict, and I’m comfortable standing behind it.

Today, Minero’s Charleston-area home is on Johns Island, at 3140 Maybank Highway. The restaurant builds its menu around house-made tortillas and cooking over live fire. There’s something reassuring about a kitchen that takes the thing wrapped around your dinner seriously.

The online menu lists the burrito from $15 before additions, filled with rice, beans, Oaxaca cheese, poblano, cabbage, avocado, crema, cilantro, and salsa verde. A useful starting point for anyone whose dinner ambitions exceed a modest appetizer.

Another dish worth knowing: the charcoal-grilled wings. Garden & Gun featured them this June, with executive chef Tyler McCarron explaining the seasoning and grilling behind their following. A Mexican restaurant with wings worth their own story? That gets my attention.

The Johns Island space offers a large indoor-outdoor bar, a climate-controlled patio, and on-site parking. Bring an appetite and someone willing to negotiate over the last taco.

Of course I had to see what the “World Famous” burrito hype was about. I added shrimp, and that crispy cheese crust 🤌🏽 Even though it’s HUGE, it was surprisingly light—and big enough to turn the leftovers into a bowl the next day.

Happy hour in the holy city: @mineroji edition! 🌮🍺

I’ve made it my mission to find happy hours that are worth your time & money, and trust me when I tell you that you will not be disappointed by Minero. 4-6 p.m. Monday through Friday with $9 Margs (frozen or in the rocks), $2 Modelos (or $10 pitchers 🤪) and a KILLER assortments of bites that are perfect to share.

We loved the Mole Fries, Taco-Dilla & Two Taco Plate (you can pick any two from the menu, plus rice & beans for $10!!), and I would absolutely come back for these happy hour deals.
