I would have never imagined that Peru would be much more than just a destination, it’s a living, breathing culture you can taste in every bite.

From the coastal freshness of ceviche to recipes rooted deep in the Andes, every dish carries history, resilience, and pride.

The flavors are bold because the culture is bold, layered, vibrant, and unapologetically alive. Food here isn’t just food; it’s tradition passed down, stories shared at the table, and heritage served with heart.

Peru, your culture is beautiful and your food is proof.

@mingaperu is a nongovernmental organization (NGO) with 25+ years of experience, empowering women and youth in the Amazon through radio programs, leadership training, and climate resilience.

In June 2024, co-founder Eliana Elias traveled to Colorado Springs and spoke at Benet Hill Monastery. Inspired by her stories of social change, twenty-three sisters, staff, and friends of Benet Hill traveled to the Amazon River Basin of Peru in November 2025 for a life-changing pilgrimage.

Take a look at how it went!

A few months ago, I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to the Amazon Rainforest with the SMU Human Rights Program.

Going in, I had zero expectations. I had never been south of the equator. I was utterly amazed by the Natural Beauty that exists there.

But the Beauty wasn’t just the Nature.

We spent time with the Kukama – an Indigenous community living in the Loreto region of the Peruvian Amazon along the Marañón River. The People there were some of the Richest I have ever encountered. Not in the way we usually define wealth, but Rich in Life.

They’re deeply connected with each other, like a true unit. They wield immense knowledge of their environment and pass it down from generation to generation. And they move through life as a collective, living symbiotically with Nature.

Their way of Life is deeply tied to the river, the land, and the seasons. And it’s precisely this way of Life that is now being threatened – by a changing climate they did little to cause. They have every right to be angry at “Western” people like me. But it was quite the opposite. Instead, they welcomed us with gifts, hugs, and generosity.

We visited several communities and worked alongside them on projects meant to support future generations become entrepreneurs.

On our final day, we traveled to the mouth of the Amazon – where the river is born. We were each given a palm and asked to think about what we wanted to leave there, and what we wanted to take with us going forward.

We sat for several minutes before we all let our palms into the river. I think about that Offering (“ofrenda”) often.

I put so much pressure on myself to find the right words to describe my experiences, but I now have come to the realization that sharing my perspective matters – even if it’s incomplete. Because it may never be complete. Because Life is a process, and it’s one that may never actualize. So, for now, here’s some of my favorite moments.

I’m thankful to @mingaperu, smuhrp, the other students, community members, and volunteers, but especially to @tamifowler, who vouched for a scholarship for me that made this trip possible.

These are memories I will think about for the rest of my life.

25 years ago, Minga Peru asked indigenous women in the Amazon what they needed to create the world they wanted to pass on to their daughters and sons: a world of gender equality, economic sustainability, and climate resilience.

Their responses have shaped programs and transformed communities.

We were so excited today to see @mingaperu at work with the young people in the community our group is currently at in the Peruvian Amazon.

We see you and thank you Minga for all you do to make this unequivocal part of the world a better place.💥

Check them out, give them a follow and support their awesome work!

Help Peru recognizes and applauds the contributions and efforts of women across the globe to build a more equitable, peaceful, healthy world! We at Help Peru believe women must be at the center of the development process in order to achieve lasting sustainable change. We do this by ensuring all our programs, regardless of specific focus area include initiatives that address women’s the empowerment and gender equity! Our organization focuses on three thematic areas environment, health and education - today we will highlight environment, more specifically climate change!

Barranco, Lima. I stayed in a rather run down bohemian area of Lima, grand crumbling buildings abounded and a group of artists were squatting in a nearby palace. A fabulous place with great value cafes and restaurants in 1982. It had its very own Puente de los Suspiros.
