cabaret cahuenga ✶ a cross-section of the city’s cultural workers came together to party, dance, and talk about the future of los angeles.

amidst DJ sets by @jasmine.johnson @robaquino @helladesi @aasim @miracle_jacho two manifestos were read by @brexitlefleur and @chanteldancelife , a treatise for why the coyote should be our city’s mascot, and the akbar manifesto of 1996. both of these readings refused the idea that the city we have is the only city possible, asking what kind of city we want to live in, who gets to stay here, and whether we can still imagine something better than the conditions we’ve inherited.

we were joined by councilmember and mayoral candidate @nithyaforthecity , who spoke about a city that is becoming impossible while too many of its institutions continue to fail the people they are supposed to serve. los angeles belongs to the people who live here, not to the interests that profit from extracting wealth from it.

the LA we have now is not inevitable. higher rents, broken systems, displacement, and political cynicism are not the best we can do. everyone who makes this city what it is deserves an advocate who believes local government can still accomplish things.

the latest poll is a reminder that this race is very much alive.
this is a 3-way race. only the top 2 candidates make it to the november runoff.
angelenos do not have to choose between a failed status quo and maga chaos.
nithya is now polling ahead of spencer pratt and within striking distance of the incumbent mayor. she can absolutely win this race.

for all of la’s wealth and creativity, too many people are paying more and getting less. higher rents, broken systems, endless frustration, and a city hall that too often seems incapable of turning good intentions into results. nithya is the only candidate in this race talking seriously about affordability and the cost of living, while also refusing to take corporate money from the interests that have helped create many of these problems in the first place.

a city is made by the people who show up for it.
as nithya put it: “if we can dance tonight, we will win this race.”
