Ever since debuting his @nashpaints_ project with “Blindman the Gambler” back in 2020, Finn Carraher McDonald has been committed to the idea of simply letting the music speak for itself. There’s a certain mystique to the project that feels directly at odds with a world increasingly dominated by the digital economy and the need for constant self-promotion, but that element of it especially comes from a general adoration for artists and labels that leave something for the listener to uncover. Nashpaints’ first release in five years occupies a very similar space.

Recorded almost entirely at home, “Everyone Good Is Called Molly” is swirling with variety, hazy, enveloping and eerily evocative of multiple eras all at once, pulling from a plethora of references that just so happen to share those same qualities. But while the drawings of Cindy Lee, Deerhunter, my bloody valentine and old country can be heard throughout, McDonald still manages to warp every element into something distinctly his own, equally connected and detached from the current moment.

In his first-ever interview, McDonald discusses the musical spaces and communities that have played a part in his career, the six-year journey between Nashpaints records, his evolving approach to production and songwriting, the ideas behind “Everyone Good Is Called Molly” and much more.

𝘕𝘌𝘞 𝘐𝘕: Nashpaints - Everyone Good Is Called Molly [MIRROR002] 🪞 @mirrorvvorld @nashpaints_

Repressed! Nashpaint’s (Dublin) Sophomore release “Everyone Good is Called Molly” neatly bundles various pieces of angst riddled pop and playful sound design to create a sonic world that feels anchored by the past while reaching towards new terrain. Nostalgic guitar and vocal lines float against reverb soaked digi-lofi synth pads filling out both the songs and vignettes. Fans of Cindy Lee, Copenhagen’s burgeoning alt pop scene, or Deerhunter can all find something to love on here.

🌐 Available now at the ISC Webshop.

“Fingerstyle acoustic guitar, enveloped in field recordings. This album is a homemade folk oddity, a meditation on adolescence, religion and nature.”

New Irish Music round-up is back! ☀️

We’ve got a killer new Gilla Band tune, sublime LPs from Mel Keane, No You, Stephen Star and Goodtime John, fab EPs from BUKKY and Caitlin Orla Eve, and a really great fundraising compilation from Rudimentary Records.

A few small tweaks to the format this time. Slightly fewer releases than usual, and I’ve tried to keep the write-ups a bit shorter. There are a few reasons for this, and I think it’s how I’ll aim do things moving forward.

For one thing, as I watched the list of albums, EPs and singles I wanted to cover expand over the past few weeks, I realised there’s often just too much to include in one monthly or bi-monthly dump. Plus, I want to feel able to write about a release and not wait until I’ve written about 20 more to share it.

So, more regular, but shorter round-ups basically. Same volume of stuff, just not all at once. Another one in the next week or two.

I’m also trying to devise a more savvy way of sharing stuff on here in a way that isn’t nauseating, because unfortunately that does just seem to be the best way to get people to engage with this stuff. You’ll have to drag me kicking and screaming into any face to camera business though.

Anyway, enough housekeeping! It’s all over on the other place. If you like what you read, please subscribe and give us a share. It’s a big help!
