TAUPO ULTRA 100K - OCTOBER 17 , 2026
RACE RECAP 🥈

THE FUELING STRATEGY
Was in bed at 8pm for a 3.30am wakeup. Had a bagel with banana & honey and a coffee, and hit the road by 4am for the start line. For the drive I had a Monster energy drink and banana.
Started off with six gels [PURE COLA race gels], one I consumed 20 mins before the race, and then one every 30 mins during the race. Also had @skratchlabs carb/electo mix in my flasks, so was hitting about 100-110g of carbs per hour.
START 2 HINGARAE [29K]
We started at 5.35am , welcomed on the trail with a hikoi. I made sure to hang in the top 5 from the start so I wasn't caught behind people on the single trail. For the first 10k I was in a three-man train [4th place], allowing the man in front to set the pace. By 10k this man started to slow down and I made my move to jump into 3rd. From here, I caught second place after the first aid station, and hung with him until 17k, when he unfortunately rolled his ankle. I managed to catch the leader of the 100k relay on the final climb into Hingarae, then had a quick interchange.
HINGARAE 2 AIRSTRIP [50K]
From here I was feeling very strong and was under course record pace, little did I know race leader Gary Carleton was in the process of smashing that record. We were in farmland for the next 10ish k , and took a rogue 💩 off the track. It seems the 'Code Brown' nickname may have to stick. From here I entered a long road section, where I was dropping 4:10 to 4:30 steady k's, before entering the Airstrip to rapturous applause led by @fredenrun / @union.athletics buddies. Again had a very quick interchange, and passed the 50k mark just a few seconds over 4 hrs.
AIRSTRIP 2 KINLOCH [76K]
We were onto the beautiful undulating tracks of the 50k course, and I was able to hold pace. Fueling had gone well all day and I was still feeling strong. Once I got to Kinloch township and hit the suburb pavements, I was exposed to the afternoon heat and unforgiving concrete. 5k out from the final major aid station, I was starting to hit the pain cave. Sat down for 2 mins, downed a coke, and had Blaine pacing for the final stretch.
KINLOCH 2 FINISH [100K]

MAJOR 6/6

Overcome with euphoria and relief on this one.

The culmination of an absolute windfall of a year.

Anyone that knows me well, probably knew I had it in me, but I sure had to break some bad habits.

I did my first Ultra here in 2024, and it has very much been a redemption story for me.

Thanks to @thebloggrapher for being the absolute master crewman and pacer.

Thanks for @fredenrun buddies for cheering me on through the midway point @avanijagavkar @roseywilkinson @_callum.massey_ .

Thanks to my parents for coming down to support. And all those who sent out messages of encouragement and/or congratulations.

Thanks to my advisory board @david.2me @leonardterry @scott_bougen @pfitzy_92 for the pearls of wisdom.

Thanks to the team @union.athletics for my only speedwork for the week.

Race debrief will be forthcoming in a few days.

5KM: 17:45 (3:33min/km), Happy with that.

The strategy was the same as always - send it and try to hold on for dear life (we only positive splits around here).

Swipe to slide 2 for some majestic form 4km in and slide 4 for the workouts done (and missed) over the last 10 weeks #gatekeeping
