Tonight on @bbcradio3: Friday Night is Music Night - Sound of Sleep 💫

Hopes, nightmares, deep relaxation and fantasies beyond the imagination: they’re all part of the cycle of sleep and tonight our Principal Guest Conductor @eoutwater leads us and @mishkamomen (a dream of a pianist) on a musical journey through the different patterns and states of sleep. Featuring music by Maurice Ravel, Max Richter, Missy Mazzoli, Philip Glass and more.

This concert was co-created by BBC Open Music trainees, with Creative Director Ruth Mariner. It was recorded in Alexander Palace Theatre.

Rameau introduces an imitation of nature in ‘Le rappel des oiseaux’ (roughly translated as ‘The conference of the birds’). This piece was most likely inspired by Rameau’s friendship with the Jesuit Père Castel, who discussed with the composer the phenomenon and study of birdsong.

SOMETIMES A RECORD REMINDS YOU OF A PERSON.
SOMETIMES IT REMINDS YOU OF KINDNESS.

@mishkamomen’s Hall of Mirrors brings together music by Couperin, Rameau and Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre.

For Craig Byrd, it carries another memory.

He arrived in Amsterdam on September 11.

While traveling through France, strangers approached him—without prompting—to offer condolences for what had happened in America.

Twenty-five years later, that kindness remains.

And now, unexpectedly, this music brings some of it back.

That may be one of music’s quiet miracles:

It remembers things we didn't know we were asking it to remember.

Twenty-five years later, we remember.

We remember the lives lost.
We remember the people who ran toward danger.
We remember the families changed forever.
We remember the kindness of strangers.
We remember the days, weeks and years that followed.

And we remember that music has always been one of the ways human beings make sense of what cannot easily be understood.

Today’s New in Music This Week is different.

The albums gathered here are not all explicitly about September 11. But each, in its own way, speaks to remembrance, friendship, loss, resilience, beauty and the simple human need to keep listening.

Music can’t change what happened.
But sometimes it can help us carry what happened.

Today, we listen.

Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre’s harpsichord pieces are adventurous and florid, combining dramatic Italianate touches with French rhetorical gestures. The Suite in G minor begins with an unmeasured prelude, recalling those by Louis Couperin.
