In light of #earthday we wanted to highlight the Whites Seahorse Breeding Project. Through studying Marine Biology at @utsscience @utsengage, and the support of the @fishecologylabuts we are honoured to be able to assist and be inspired by this conservation project. To help save population numbers in the wild, endangered Whites Seahorse (Hippocampis whitei) are reared at Sealife Aquarium and then tagged and released into Sydney Harbour. These Seahorses are endemic to the east coast of Australia, and are endangered due to habitat loss and seagrass decline. This video was filmed inside the breeding lab at Sealife last year. It shows juvenile seahorses across a range of different age groups. ENDANGERED My dear friend and collaborator @jordanaskill and I made a short film following the SEA LIFE White’s Seahorse Breeding Project for @kitx that was played before her AAFW Resort 21-22 show Underworld at Carriageworks. The White’s Seahorse is an endangered species found locally in Sydney Harbour and in our waters between Jervis Bay and Queensland. The White’s Seahorse, also known as the Sydney Seahorse, is one of three Seahorse species endemic to Australia and only one of two species globally that has been listed by the IUCN as endangered. And it lives right on our doorstep. Scientists at the University of Technology Sydney are collaborating with a number organizations to recover the White’s Seahorses by implementing a new breeding and conservation project. In this critical program Seahorse babies are being born into custom-built tanks at Sea Life. The male gives birth to up to 100-250 young at a time and the juveniles are then carefully re-introduced into the harbour. The natural home and habitat for these creatures are sponge gardens, seagrass meadows and soft corals. In Sydney there has been a massive seagrass decline over recent years. The amazing team at @operationposidonia are doing such important and inspiring work trying to replant these crucial seagrass habitats. ENDANGERED My dear friend and collaborator @alicewesleysmith and I were able to make a short film for KITX. We were fortunate enough to follow SEA LIFE White’s Seahorse Breeding Project. In our world right now over 37,400 species are considered endangered and at risk of extinction. This is due primarily to human activity; in particular pollutants and habitat loss from marine and land clearing. 41% of amphibians, 33% of reef-building corals, 26% of mammals, 36% of sharks and rays, and 14% of birds are under threat. The White’s Seahorse is an endangered species found locally in Sydney Harbour and in our waters between Jervis Bay and Queensland. Scientists at the University of Technology Sydney are collaborating with SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium and together have started to recover the White’s Seahorses by implementing a new breeding and conservation project.   With their other-worldly eighteen dorsal-fin rays, sixteen pictorial-fin rays and their tall coronet and long hyper-real snouts, these beautiful White’s Seahorses are part of the trophic chain the makes up our precious biosphere, environment and living world.
