In 1980, ICI collaborator Peter Fend founded Offices and the Ocean Earth Construction and Development Corporation with artists Colen Fitzgibbon, Jenny Holzer, Peter Nadin, Richard Prince and Robin Winters, later renamed Ocean Earth Development Corporation (OCEAN EARTH). Throughout Fend’s career, he has mapped nearly every part of the world by organizing the terrain according to water systems rather than geopolitical boundaries. In BIRDS REIGN, we follow the paths of three swaths of birds converging on the arctic. 🌎🕊

"Feisty and lacking formal education, she was largely forgotten –until Covid-19 came along. But the daughter of a Glasgow bus driver is still playing a major role in the fight against coronavirus, nearly 13 years after her death. June Almeida, the virologist who discovered the first human coronavirus, has been hailed as "one of the greatest scientists of her generation".

Our culture has been whipped with the plague, for which we honor every single being lost, the vulnerable and those facing difficulties in their daily lives. Join us Sunday, May 24 at 3pm EST for an online listening session of new electronic tracks by Berlin-based artist and electronic music producer @laminfofana_. 🎧 Contrasting the reality of our world with what is beyond it, Fofana's music explores questions of movement, migration, alienation, and belonging. Aiming for both physical and emotional resonance, Fofana's works attempt to challenge authoritative forms of representation and communication while drawing upon the artists’ personal experiences of diaspora, the coming and going of communities. Fofana will be joined in conversation by New York-based writer and curator @serubiri. The listening session will be moderated by Alaina Claire Feldman, curator and director of CUNY's @mishkingallery, where Fofana's New York debut exhibition BLUES opened short before the lockdown. RSVP for Zoom invite via link in bio. Free! #cultureathome #laminfofana #serubirimoses #mishkingallery

On View by Flash Art: Lamin Fofana “BLUES” @mishkingallery / New York. Link in bio. "Lamin Fofana’s music is a conduit for engaging with an array of issues involving blackness, migration, displacement, and race through collective listening. Fofana creates spaces for contemporary black life in the West that are informed by his interest in history and the sonic and “allow for dreaming and imagining other ways of being” which foreground non-linear thinking and experience. The exhibition centers on a trilogy of sound works comprising the albums Black Metamorphosis, Darkwater, and Blues that engage with seminal texts by Sylvia Wynter, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Amiri Baraka to reflect on historical and epistemological trajectories of contemporary social and political thought through the lens of Black Studies. These works will be presented alongside videos and photographs by Fofana and his collaborators Jim C. Nedd and Nicolas Premier." #LaminFofana

Sound is inexhaustible, there is never not sound around us. At this juncture, there are things we do not want to hear (the sirens, the numbers) and there are things we do want to hear, like the laughter of a loved one. Even though we cannot be together, we all hear the news and collectively understand that the world is changing. Such acts of listening challenge how we experience a shared reality rather than solely as an individual. We are all in this together.

The work of Lamin Fofana encourages collective listening as a socio-political practice and one such that engenders understanding, healing and responsibility by bridging sounds from the past and present. You can watch the guided exhibition tour of BLUES by artists Lamin Fofana and Nicolas Premier on our blog (link in bio).

“Defenselessness is one of the main unifying characteristics of nearly all of the New Blockheads’ performances. It operates like a document of the times and as an independent phenomenon in art - beyond the context of the times. Many of their actions acquired new, unforeseen meanings.” —

An interview with Peter Belyi, co-curator of the exhibition ‘The Brotherhood of New Blockheads (1996 - 2002)’ currently held at @mishkingallery. Based on a group of young artists and locals who put on spontaneous performances in Saint Petersburg, Russia between the mid-90s to early 2000s.
